Also, have you ever known that to happen? A failed studio releasing source? All the source releasing stuff I can think of were from studios that still existed, such as id releasing source for older games. Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines/Troika Games.. been community supported basically for 7 years There's a difference between being community supported (not uncommon), and getting the source code (very rare). I'm fairly sure that that game didn't have its source code released. |

You get access to the alpha for pre-ordering That may be why they don't get any press ;p I think the amount of peeps pre-ordering 4x games has just been reduced drastically.. SOTS2, LOP... at some point even the gullible learn. |

Yeah, moo3 with mods, obviously.. I never liked CIV4 much because of the grid system. It had so many issues.. in turn I don't like CIV5 much because it has literally taken away 90% of the complexity and things that I thought were fun in CIV4.. heh.
And Galciv 2.. no. That game is just a shallow skirmish game, you have so few tactical options in that game.... The AI's is decent, but that's it. The game has no "flair" . MOO3 had flair. It hat terrible issues on release, but I am talking about the "fruit" mods...
I forgot SOTS1, that was fun too, especially with mods ^^ |

People lamenting the death of another 4X might be interested in Star Lords. You get access to the alpha for pre-ordering, and my impression is that it's already in a pretty playable state.
I haven't spent money on it yet. YMMV. But I haven't seen it getting any press. |

MoO3 was such a disappointment, there was lots of potential, but it was marred by such a broken release. I fixed it up as much as I could without source code, but meh. I wish franchises were automatically released into the public domain after a certain number of years without a new release. It'd be nice to see what a MoO Kickstart could do, but there's no way they'd be able to get the rights. |

Anyways i never bought LoP but i'm always sad to see a 4x fail. World needs more, not less of them. Perhaps this will be a lesson in the future for other would be 4x developers to take their time, or get a bigger budget for a longer development time. |

In this case they use Ogre though, which is definitely not license restricted... only API I can see that is licensed in this game is irrklang (for sound)
And I am not sure how releasing the game source-code would somehow reveal licensed API's here.. but maybe there's stuff inside we don't know.. in any case, no tears should be shed over this. (Except of course, if you bought it.. ) |

Because then this (can) happen, and you're left with a broken game.
Creston Except that this actually happened because gamers did not support the devs that released a broken game. It was universally panned, and no one bought it. So they went bankrupt. So the answer is to buy MORE broken games? Yeah, no. This got TERRIBLE word of mouth when it was released basically as a non-functional product. If devs can't deliver something that works, they deserve to go bunk.
Creston I'm just saying that exactly what you wanted to happen, happened. Bad game released. Not bought by gamers. Game company goes bust. Everyone's happy. |

Prez wrote on Oct 6, 2012, 20:54: Not knowing anything about coding or programming, I'm surprised developers imbed licensed software in their game's source code. I figured that would be separate. Well, a lot of times the whole game engine is licensed. SWTOR licensed the game engine from Heroes Journey. They don't own the engine that they built the game on. They also licensed the back end from another company, and so on and so forth. So, some of the game mechanics are theirs, and the art and sound assets, but all the rest of the code was bought from someone else and they have no right to pass it on to anybody else. |
