As for the triple crown not getting the attention it deserves, it's because quite a lot of fans are (grudgingly) starting to realize that batting average and RsBI are fairly pointless statistics. They're fun to look at in a glance, but people (even the mongrels at the BBWAA) are slowly coming to accept that there are much better statistics that tell you much more about how good and how valuable a player really is.
That said, it is still a pretty tremendous achievement, and I applaud it.

Then again, Mike Trout (the main rival to Cabrera for the MVP race) largely has a high WAR value due to blowing out the numbers on stolen bases, a stat that almost nobody specializes in anymore. As a result, even a modest stolen base total will cause a significant raise in WAR (as the average player at their position will have very few). For somebody like Trout, who ran away with the stolen base lead...
It results in interesting numbers, but saying Trout should be MVP based on WAR inflated by stolen bases means that Vince Coleman and Rickey Henderson should've almost never lost the MVP in their primes. |

you must not come to LA much. the dodgers and kings always sell well, even in bad years. even the dodgers last losing season in '05 had them in the top 5 in attendance. and the kings sold out every home game last year. it's just a symptom of out-of-state and rival ignorance that people think otherwise, because it's never been true.
I have lived in California for half of my nearly 40 years. Both ends of the state. I am in SoCal more often then I would actually like. I am glad that has been your experience, that certainly makes being a fan more fun....but everyone from Sportscenter to LA's local CSN channel was making fun of how popular the Kings got late last year. Hell, the Kings players were joking about it.

Funny thing is, I pretty much knew the Vikes and Texans were going to win but I just can't bring myself to choose them. Now, if we're talking money that's a different story. Ok, let's see what the Magic 8-Ball says for this week...I feel like taking some risks.

Actually, I'm much more aligned with the Tea Party than with the OWS people, as you seem to suggest. And I didn't mean to insult you, just a bit weary of the cynical disengagement I see from some, when I think we need more informed participation instead.

No, I'm just tired of the two-party system where your only choice is liar 1 on the left or liar 2 on the right. Sure, you can vote for an independent, but they simply have no chance of winning, so what's really the point?
And neither the Democrats nor the Republicans would ever let another party get into any kind of "power" (metaphorically speaking), so this is all we're going to get to. Not that most other forms of government are any better, really. I think the Dutch government just fell for the 6th time in 10 years, so their way of doing things really isn't getting anything done either.
I just wish that maybe once, a candidate would be honest about something. "How are you going to tackle unemployment?" -- "Well, there really isn't much a president can do about that. We'll try what little we can to spruce up the economy, and give companies incentives to hire here rather than outsource everything, but that's about it."
As opposed to the "I WILL CREATE FOUR MILLION JOBS!" It's the exact same spiel he gave in 2008. Exact same number of jobs too.
So yeah, to me the presidential debate is just both sides bleating bullshit. They know full well that 95% of what they're saying is either impossible or they have no desire to do what they say anyway.

Ah yes, the "issues." Funny how those are pretty much the same issues we had in 2008, and that candidate #1, who won, promised to do a lot about those issues.
It might just be that many of these issues are beyond the powers of a president to fix, seeing as how the US is a free market economy, and thus not really susceptible (much) to governmental influence. But we'll hear them bleat about those issues over and over and over, full of empty promises to FIX UNEMPLOYMENT and CREATE FOUR MILLION JOBS etc etc etc.

Arizona, Cincy, Green Bay, Baltimore, G-Men, Pittsburg, Atlanta, Carolina, Chicago, Minnesota, New England, San Fran, New Orleans, Houston.
I honestly think San Diego is a better team then New Orleans, but New Orleans is due and they are playing at the Dome...hard to imagine them losing again. If I had picked the NYJ-Houston game at the beginning of the season I would have said Jets, if only because of home field advantage, but they are just a train wreck right now. |
