What about internal shielding from cosmic rays and energetic particles? How could we plot points from A to B without knowing what's at B - imagine materializing inside something like the rings of Saturn or a massive gravity well. And we'll at least need to have mastered quantum computing first. And then if we can manage all that where are habitable planets, and if not, how do we terraform the ones that come closest to what we need? Yes, the idea of warp travel is keen but it sure doesn't amount to much if we can't figure out all the other necessary stuff too. You don't need any special shielding. The system doesn't move the ship through space. It moves space/time around the ship, so things that are in the path of the ship never come in contact with it. |

| What about the US's 'heat ray' passive device (whatever it's called). Crank that up a few times and whammo you have your deflector. Now all you need is the internal shielding... |
