Bigots rationalizing bigotry, that is all it is. They'll admit that people say stupid shit, they'll admit the laws aren't fair, but their entire argument is that the oppressed should suffer in silence. We should all just pretend like there isn't a problem.

Why is it that the bigots never suffer in silence. I mean, by their logic, the best thing to do with "GaymerCon" is to pretend it's not there. Don't go to it, don't talk about it, and most certainly don't acknowledge it.

Yet...that isn't exactly what I see here.

You just utterly destroyed any rebuttal they could have, well done. Funny how these chickenheads will never practice what they preach.

And the point I'm making is that, at nearly any of these conventions, you're likely to have people going "that's gay" or "you're gay" or "that kill was gay," or somehow using homosexuality as a negative. It's pretty much a given in any form of gaming, whether related to the gaming or not.

So people that are tired of hearing that the way they are born is a synonym for someone getting a cheap kill are getting together to avoid.

Sooo, do you think they would mind if we start a explicitly "straight" gamer group? You know, where we sit around and do all the things you mentioned(act like normal straight people that is..) and NOT GIVE A FUCK? Fair is fair, right? I mean, a long time ago people worked to get rid of segregation, but apparently they were all a bunch of fucking idiots because now the very types that actually were oppressed are now drawing the lines around themselves. Yes, I'm talking about more than just gays now...

Can't say or do anything anymore without some suitcase full of issues getting offended about it these days, BUT THAT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL. Nothing to see here folks...that is unless we are insulting one of the currently 'PC' things to insult that is. Then it's open season. Just don't be Christian, Straight, or White, and you can say whatever you want and if anyone makes the terrible error of insulting you, well bad things will ensue.

Enjoy your little party, just don't expect it to advance anything except your own (deluded)rationalizations. Now go ahead and make some stupidly witty remarks to make yourselves feel superior.

Let's also start a White History Month.

Also, it's funny that you're whining about people getting offended over the tiniest thing in a thread in which you're offended by some people having a Gay friendly gaming convention in which everyone is invited.

Who's getting offended, apparently pointing out that starting a "gaymercon" is kinda silly is somehow being offended.

We should start a white history month, it would be fantastic to see folks like Al Sharpton have a massive heart attack over it. Or at least turn it into some form of twisted discrimination.

Here's the thing beamer, no one but the people going to this con really cares one way or the other. And really Rail is pretty spot on, the PC crowd DOES get offended over every little thing real or imagined. It does however imo give that whole "look at me pay attention to me!" Gist that that community does more often than not.

Kinda silly? UnderLord called it wrong. RailWizard called it a fetish, said they should all move to some island and never bother him, and you said they don't deserve their own convention (not sure what makes someone deserve their own convention, paying for it maybe?)

And here's the thing, random internet guy that can't believe someone else enjoys being different from him, the whole "every month is White History Month" argument is valid, and every gaming convention is straight white christian male gaming convention. Seeing unconventional conventions should be applauded.

You just said a guy that demanded all gay people move to their own island was right about something.

I've never understood where people think this argument line is going to get them. You've got one group of people who face prejudice on a regular basis, and you've got another group that doesn't. So because the one group wants to create a situation where they aren't going to be harrassed, the other group suddenly needs their own event too? Why? Your "explicity straight" group wasn't being harrassed in the first place. What exactly is your group supposed to be for?

The people here want to create an event where people don't insult them/look down at them, etc, simply because of their sexual orientation. People already don't look down on your "straight white men" because of their sexual orientation. The idea that there's some sort of equivalence between the two groups is ludicrous.

You're like the little kid who's crying to his parents that they have a Mother's Day and a Father's Day, but no kids' day.

Nah that's totally invalid, there are countless examples of gays who do not dance in parades in San Fran being persecuted for their sexuality. The whole reason they need to have special interest groups is precisely because like many other minorities, they are attacked for being different. Gay people shouldn't have to hide their sexuality anymore than you or I should.

I hold pretty conservative values and there are a billion shitty special interest groups that need to stop whining but I'm a big believer in the right to free speech and expression.

I agree they need not hide, because really who cares if bobby likes boys? Or whatever. I'm just over the idea that the rest of us owe them anything because they're gay. Honestly who cares?

Who said we owe them anything, other than you know, equality?

This conference isn't about owing anyone anything, it's about letting gay people play video games competitively without constantly hearing that everyone that kills another person is gay, or to blow them, or whatever else idiots say over XBL, PSN and CS:S.

Perhaps they shouldn't play online then if they're that offended. Or only play with people they know? Surely this isn't why they've decided to have a gay only "video game convention"?

Let's just be honest, not that it matters but it is a cry for attention as usual. Look at us we're gay gamers we're going to have our own show, because we're gay! Big deal.

Isn't this Conference basically playing with people they know?

Also, where is it "gay only?" Do you think they make you have sex with a man before letting you register?

Lastly, no one really seems to be giving it as much attention as you and RailWizard, so I doubt it's a cry for attention.

I think the point I was trying to make that obviously eluded your simple liberal mind, is we have game conventions already, and being gay has zero to do with gaming, what's the point?

In my experience immaturity and / or bigotry are the catalysts for this type of behavior. It tends to either go away with age or never go away at all. I ignore people like this and either:

a) Mute / block / ignore / ban / etc. (if the option is available)
b) Find a new server
c) Call my friends and play on a password protected system

"On August 3 & 4th, 2013, we will gather together to create a fun, exciting weekend of gaming, geek culture, tech talk, development, and even some partying. GaymerCon is open to all and we hope to make an experience that will be meaningful as well as exceptionally exciting and fascinating.

Supporting an inclusive group spanning all orientations/ethnicities/gender/class/creed in the gaming community - collectively titled Gaymers.

Creating a Gaymer themed convention to educate and entertain the gaming fanbase and the game developer community.

Educating and informing the gaming community of the presence of sexuality in our digital lives and promoting acceptance and social change through gaming.

Inspiring the gaming world through interesting, exciting, and provocative content.

Why GaymerCon?

"Gaming" is gargantuan, billion dollar industry - and despite its enormity, there still lacks an outlets for alternative gamers in the world. It is equally as hard for publishers to connect with and reach out to that audience.

Gaming is a common shared experience that helps us escape, educates us and helps to define who we are and want to be. Gay, Black, Latino, Lesbian, Asian, Kinksters, Women, Transgender, Bi, Nuns, Swedes, Hipsters, Browncoats, Trekkies, Xbots, Robots, Holograms, Dwarves, Lawyers and Monsters #everyonegames "

We're not the divisive ones, if other people want to believe they're a 'downtrodden minority' it's all in their heads, not mine.

...bringing back one of the original statements that turned this into a trash-talking, "your opinion is wrong" thread...

I agree that the ones who draw the line create the division. It's ironic that those who want to be accepted as a normal part of society go to such measures and in the end just call out how different they are. All it does is slow down the social agenda / goal they have. Bigots / generally hateful people have a tendency to continue to behave the way they do regardless of social / political movement. I only see people change that behavior if they have a personal experience that affects them for the better.

We have laws in this country that protect citizens from discrimination. While they are not perfect, it's really more effective to take advantage of these protections on an individual level when your rights are infringed upon. Idealistic? Maybe, but if you don't use them, you lose them.

All this being said I believe in freedom of speech and the right to assemble, so I could care less what anyone does as long as it's legal and doesn't infringe upon someone else's rights. That's my contribution to the homosexual community...

And as another contribution -- someone, please educate me on this whole gay marriage thing. Why is it so important to the gay community? The only thing I can come up with is for tax benefits, but I haven't taken much time to think or read about it since I have very little interest in it...

"I don't fear gay people, I just don't think they deserve the same rights I do, like marriage. That doesn't make me homophobic."

A strawman not too far off from some of the comments being made here.

It does not speak in your favour that you seek out this topic only to complain about how you are annoyed by its mere existence.

Oh sorry forgot to take my politically correct pills this morning. Gay people are just that people, like anyone else. Just because they like to bump uglies with the same gender doesn't make them special snowflakes who deserve their own "gaming convention"

Last I checked sexual orientation had zero to do with video games. All this is, is another cry for attention. Who gives a shit who they like to shack up with?

Listen to yourself, "They deserve protection" If they didn't have the need to constantly announce "We're gay pay us extra attention" No one would care in the first place

Political correctness does not exist so I am not even sure what you are trying to say.
Anyway, being homosexual certainly does not make them special, I agree with that part of the sentence, but I do not understand the second one. What does that have to do with making a gaming convention? Why should they not be allowed to make a gaming convention?
Most gaming conventions are targeted at the white, heterosexual males so the argument that "heterosexuals" should also have their own convention is not really invalid. From what I understand heterosexuals are still permitted to attend a homosexual convention and vice versa but that still does not explain why oh why homosexuals cannot make their own convention.

Then you are saying that this is all just a cry for attention. I do not see it this way but I would like to understand your position and therefore ask why you see it like that. Why do you think that's a cry for attention?
I really don't get this. They are just announcing a convention for homosexuals. So what? Big deal. Why are you then so upset about this?
I mean: if you don't care then you can ignore it. Right? It does not even inconvenience you in any way.

c.f. Verno's post concerning the last point.
