Miner Wars 2081 Enters Closed Beta

The Miner Wars Website announces the launch of closed beta testing of Miner Wars 2081, following extensive alpha testing of the upcoming first-person space action/simulation game. Like the alpha, the beta is open to customers who preorder the game, and here is word on where development stands:

Miner Wars 2081 has left ALPHA phase and is now officially in BETA. This is an exciting time! We've currently packed in 31 missions, which is about 10-15 hours of straight game play, but could take you much longer considering the free-roaming / sandbox gameplay, in-game editor and multi-player!

Only first 6 missions are dubbed and tested by our team. Remaining missions are in the process.

I've been a little unclear on what this is all about, which has prevented me from buying into it. Does it take place primarily in tunnels in asteroids? They mention an open-world aspect, but does that mean you can travel about the solar system? I like some of what I hear and have seen, but it does seem to keep coming back to a Descent-style tunnel shooter. I never cared much for Descent (first three), but if the tunnel fighting is one aspect of a more varied space sim experience, that's okay. Are there missions taking place in free space?

They need to change their gun sounds. (Missiles were ok) Guns in space don't sound like gattling guns on earth, and there's no echo. They probably sound closer to what the newer BattleStar Galactica series guns sounded like. (rapid but muffled)

Supported these guys right from the start bout a year or so ago. Been waiting for a solid Descent-type game, think this will be it time will tell...
