So I beat Torchlight 2 on Normal and Veteran - total playtime according to Steam is 66 hours. Great little action RPG! I normally don't ever go beyond normal difficulty but TL2's very forgiving on Normal. I didn't die until I was level 30. Of course on Veteran I was dying all over the place, which is par for the course for me.

I don't find being trolled to the point of actual rage by the developers by ridiculously unfair, excruciating difficulty in games fun in the least. I tend to have difficulty with some games that aren't even known for their difficulty; there's no way in hell I'd touch a game designed to be ridiculously, maddeningly hard with a ten-foot pole.
And reviews are NOT supposed to be objective. (Where did that even come from?) By their very nature they are SUBjective - the reviewer gives his personal opinion on the game based on his experience with it, and stating why he loved/hated a game is perfectly valid. I certainly could see writing a similar review in light of the issues he takes with the design. In fact, while I didn't have a problem with any of the more prevalent positive reviewsnof Dark Souls, I found this one the most useful, since it detailed explicitly what was wrong with the design as the reviewer saw it. Unless factually incorrect, the negatives he lists are exactly the types of things I absolutely loathe in game design. I was thinking that I might pick Dark Souls up on a Steam sale but this review helped me save that money by making it clear that I would only be frustrated by this game at any price.

I didn't notice rage, just the expected "Not again..." feeling you get when you play a shitty port of a supposedly great console game, and the confirmation that most console games have very low expectations to begin with. He spends a few paragraphs clearly misunderstanding the concept of the game, then says "oh, it's supposed to be an action RPG like Diablo," which is pretty clearly "not getting it."
Like I said, though, this doesn't moot his complaints, particularly about the technical issues. But he really expected a deeper RPG, which seems odd, as I know nothing about this game or the previous one but even I know it's a combat game with RPG elements, not the other way around. |

I refuse to play or pay for CRAP pc games ,) So sorry.. but no way am i going to touch Tony Hawks HD... that sounds like a iPhone game or something.
But a quick youtube visit proves you right.. ok, let me rephrase, "*some* of the wonkiest physics ever seen on a pc game" But the way dead bodies act in Dark Souls is pretty hilariously broken. |

I haven't played the game, or even seen the game, but it definitely struck me very much as "doesn't get it."
But that doesn't moot his technical complaints, and honestly, just because you don't get something doesn't mean your review is invalid. Lots of players won't "get it," either. You read a few reviews of a game to get a comprehensive view, and you read a few reviews by a reviewer to know whether you get the same things he gets or miss the same things he misses. |

That is, in fact, the whole point of a review - you play the game, and then describe your playing experience. Incorrect. His rage got the better of him. It works both ways. If someone gets on their knees and doesn't let up then they too are not being objective - see any Skyrim review.

Yes because unavoidable instant deaths and constant retreading of already walked ways is so amazing... not to mention no pause, no quick-save, no proper controls on PC and a total f'ed up half-assed port and a terrible out-dated engine and the wonkiest physics ever seen on a PC game
The game has a good combat and a pretty nice mood in an interesting world. But it is not a master-piece, certainly not when viewed as what makes a good PC game.
Also, Steam is down. for me. So yeah. Error 503 Service Unavailable Steam: No Connection
So I am not really hating Dark Souls, I am just annoyed because of Steam
Going from the steam stats, steam is down globally. HAHA Awesome.

For me (and for a lot of people), Dark Souls is one of the best games of this generation. For me, it has great visuals, and its subtle storytelling is a breath of fresh air. For me, it has the best combat of any RPG I've ever played, and many brilliant gameplay mechanics that make sense within the game. For me, Dark Souls is much more than the sum of its parts; for me, it's a masterpiece.
Not for everyone, though, apparently. And that's fine. Yeah that "review" is not a review, it's pathetic dribble. He's just bitching non-stop. You can't objectively review something you clearly hate. This guy has posted dribble reviews before. Ranting and raving does not make for quality reading. |
