Battle.net Adding "Appear Offline" Mode

The Diablo III Website announces that a pretty basic feature is soon being added to Battle.net; the ability to appear offline. This will actually be patched into each game individually, starting with the upcoming version 1.0.5 patch for Diablo III:

In the coming months, we're planning an update to Battle.net that will give you more control over your online presence when playing Blizzard games. Soon, World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and Diablo III players will be able to select "Appear Offline" as one of their Battle.net social-status options (along with Available, Busy, and Away) for those times when they want to wander Azeroth by their lonesome, dominate the galaxy in radio silence, or slay demons in solitude. When you choose this option as your status, all of your Real ID friends, BattleTag friends, and character-level friends will see you as “Offline” in their friends list whenever you’re logged into a game.

The “Appear Offline” status option will be added to World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and Diablo III separately in future updates for each game. For Diablo III, we expect to add the feature in a patch after 1.0.5. For World of Warcraft and StarCraft II, we expect to add the option sometime after the release of each game’s upcoming expansion.

Then, six months later, they'll introduce an exciting new update that let's you *quit* the program and return to the desktop.

Paid DLC or expansion pack?

Finally, a much requested feature is being added...

Too bad it's not the much more requested 'Be Offline' feature...

Edit: hahaha.. 'My entire friends list had already long figured out this feature and have been 'appearing offline' for a while : )'

Edit: I see no 'TL2 shipped' announcement (maybe Blue is too busy playing it), so I vote this be the TL2 thread until then... : )

How are people liking it? : )

What's next? I expect nothing less, other than to see Activision Investors jump ship, seeing how no one with a brain would ever buy their games again, oh wait, nvm, apparantly there are millions of brainless people still supporting and playing Diablo3 to this day, sigh... I tried.

Here is high hopes, that the Kickstarter Venture takes off into high gear, and dethrones the likes of Blizzard and EA, once and for all. Good riddance, bean counting publishers.

And this appear offline nonsense, it is nothing but to help Blizzard investors sleep well at night, knowing that perhaps it is people choosing to set themselves as offline, rather than simply proving that NO ONE IS ACTUALLY PLAYING THIS DEFUNCT GAME ANYMORE since some time now.

I think you're being optimistic, I totally expect Blizzard to embrace the console in a big way at some point. Millions of sales and your fans will tolerate pretty much any abuse, publishers wet dream. I'm assuming the only thing holding that back is battle.net.

Sigh, fucking Actiblizz. Just keeps getting worse and worse.

I halfway expect the next Blizzard release to not have any way to quit it other than a hard power-cycle of the computer. They'll call it the new and exciting "always on" plan, so that you don't even have to log into the game or launch it. It's just always running, waiting for you.

Then, six months later, they'll introduce an exciting new update that let's you *quit* the program and return to the desktop.

So...by your logic, NOT having the ability to even appear offline, let alone be offline, to play a game by yourself, is "normal"...?

Is this a Twitter thing?

Not everyone needs, or even wants, to be connected to everyone else everywhere at all times.

Just a small correction here..

"The Diablo III Website announces that a pretty basic feature is soon being added to Battle.net; the ability to appear offline. This will actually be patched into each game individually, starting with the upcoming version 1.0.5 patch for Diablo III"

In reality, this feature is being added in a patch after 1.0.5...

"For Diablo III, we expect to add the feature in a patch after 1.0.5."

Man, that's quite a unique feature they're adding there. It's brilliant.

Hey Blizzard, I thought the whole point of the always-on DRM in Diablo 3 was because people would OBVIOUSLY want to play it co-op? Makes good sense you're adding an APPEAR OFFLINE option for when people want to play it... solo? But you said that nobody would ever want to do that?

The sense coming out of that place transcends logic.

Creston

This is really just a feature to stop people from getting pestered by friends and family. Sometimes people just want to play the game with random people or solo. People shouldn't have to alert their presence every time they load up the game. Most game services or IM or social networks have a join as invisible option. It was about time they added this.

I am sure you could still join random people or party or raid or etc as usual.

I can't believe you took the time to explain that to him...lol.

I am fairly certain Creston, and everybody else, already knew what the point of it is.

LOL! I suppose that this to them is the next best thing to actuallly being able to play offline. I already have an appear offline mode - I just yank the CAT5 out of the routed and voila! I appear offline.
