Soon you'll actually have to release good games, or go out of business. I can't wait until all you worthless fucking vultures are gone.
Creston No it's not. Just like reality TV and fast food most of the masses only want the shovelware. These kickstarters so far are blip on the radar for the publishers. You can obviously see them doing something like this not because they're scared but because they're greedy, immoral pigs. No, my friend, so long as most of humanity is much the same, they and those like them will always be around. However, that's not to say those of us walking the different path can't have ours.
I gave you stick on the "Modem Off? Get Charged For Usage By Cogeco Anyway" thread but IMHO you're spot on here. I'd guess that one of the annual Call of Duty game makes a hell of a lot more than all the KickStarter games put together. They're not doing this because they're running scared, they're doing this because they can. Credit Obsidian for telling them where to go but others may not.
The article references "known developers" but I don't see why this couldn't apply to unknown ones at least as much as they may be more desperate for a publisher. I assume that the publisher still funds much of the game and isn't getting the game for free because if that was the case, the why would any developer talk to the publisher. Few KickStarters raise more than $1,000,000, which doesn't fund much of a big budget game. |
