Steam Hardware Beta Plans

Engadget hears from Valve's Jeri Ellsworth about recently unveiled plans for Valve hardware. She talks of the team's one-year goal being "To make Steam games more fun to play in your living room," implying a controller of some sort. They talk about plans to get prototypes into the hands of gamers for beta testing "in the coming year," though there are no details on how this will work. She also refers to the wearable computer stuff they've discussed as a longer-term goal, saying it's probably two to five years off.

I like to keep my outside life and gaming separate. Thanks.

A decade is fine, if you think about it. Consider it as futureproofing your Steam library for when humanity finally goes completely insane and we're existing off handheld devices. There will exist...a Steam time portal.

The hardware being developed by Valve is very promising for disabled gamers as well, who commonly hit a brick wall when looking for intuitive alternatives to standard controller designs that can rival a keyboard & mouse.

I'm very much looking forward to what they have to show, whether it be in 1-3 years time, or a decade. Forward progress is still very much a good thing, despite the speed at which it comes.

James Woods: Oh that's fun. That sounds like you had a fun time. Where would I fit in with the fun time, huh? Where does James Woods fit into the fun?
