Yeah, close to Avatar in quality...and length.
I still remember those PS2 commercials promising a virtual reality experience…You never saw PS2 gameplay, only CGI cutscenes.

They say that kind of thing before every new iteration of consoles. Never happens. Jurassic Park came out in '93 and even current pc games still don't look as good.

I believe them totally.

Same graphic level along with the same low AI.

Looks like the time of year for the same game with roster updates from EA. As for the console graphics getting close to Avatar, as they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

HAH, we already know what next-gen consoles are capable of because they're based on current PC hardware which will be outdated by the time next-gen consoles are released.

I wouldn't mind if they were based on current mid-range PC hardware. (ie, a 7950) They are not though. If the rumors are true, they are based on last generation's LOW-END hardware. A 6670 is a just a poor joke.

Oh man I would not want to play Terraria with a controller. I wonder how long the gap was between him declaring this dead and then getting picked up for a port.

People are seriously overestimating next-gen capabilities.

Let's wait and see what Microsoft says. Some jackass at AMD bragging in summer 2011 is mostly meaningless. He's removed from the process and likely too out of touch with the industry to remember the whole Emotion Engine thing, and basically any Playstation launch ever.

I doubt Microsoft will do bragging quite like this. They'll use comparisons that are reaches, they are selling after all, but they'll avoid the hyperbole that keeps biting Sony in the ass. Even Sony has learned that such hyperbole goes over extremely poorly.

As for the guy involved here, I still say his lighting comparison is vague and meaningless. What does "close" mean? And how so? Dynamic ambient occlusion and realtime global illumination are a given. What about shadows, is he including that in "lighting?" We can't get near what Avatar did in real time, but how "close" are we talking? We can get real time dynamic soft shadows, fine. Maybe we can even get every item creating shadows. How about people's noses creating shadows on their faces, though?

Yes, and if the 6670 rumor is true then people are going to be severely disappointed with the next console generation since an average PC nowadays is much better than a box with a fucking 6670 card.

The new generation is the biggest danger to the industry as I've always said. I believe it will have a 6670 card or the equivalent and shatter the hopes of many console gamers.

Oh yeah, forgot AMD said that.

They said it about 17 months ago, and got laughed at.

I saw the guy talking about the lighting, what stood out to me was this part of the article:

"With that said, AMD has already mentioned that the next gen Xbox could produce Avatar-like graphics and the co-founder of Geomerics has followed in AMD's footsteps claiming that lighting capabilities could hit that benchmark as well."

The Geomerics guy could be right. AMD is talking bullshit though.

I should certainly hope we will what with the amount of time it's been since 360's release. It's been seven years. How's that for making you feel old? Seven years of chesthighwalls!

The fact it's lasted 7 years is part of the reason why I doubt we'll get a big boost. Developers for the most part don't want a lot more power, just enough to overcome some current handicaps (low ram, etc). Development costs are high enough already that a single failed game can collapse a company. And we're at the threshold where a lot more power isn't going to translate to as big an improvement in visuals as we've seen in the past.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Close to Avatar's quality. Have you idiots at Geomerics, whatever the fuck that is, actually SEEN the rumored specs for these boxes? They won't even be able to match Witcher 2's graphics, much less Avatar's.

Fuck, the hype machine that's underway is already reaching fucking ridiculous proportions. MS and Sony dollars are obviously being spent well.

Edit : Okay, so he's just talking about the lighting. I don't think the lighting in Avatar really stood out, so that's probably possible

Seeing as, if I'm recalling correctly, not even Avatar was using fully ray-traced lighting, it's quite possible to reach those levels of lighting with the rumored specs of the x720/PS4.

As far as hitting the overall level of graphics of The Witcher 2... with the rumored specs, I'd say it's possible, but not going to be a cakewalk, either. (Lower system overhead on a console helps, as does targeting shader design to a specific architecture... even still it may require use of APUs to fully pull off what the PC versions can do.)

Yeah, I'm sure the lighting would be possible. As for the graphics on the Witcher 2... I guess they probably COULD run it (I'm talking the highest level of detail), but it'd be a slideshow.

The title of the article says:Xbox 720, PS4 Graphics Could Get Close To Avatar's Quality, Says Geomerics.
I don't care about lighting and stuff if I read that to me that means if I fire up CoD on my Xbox 720 the game will look like I am playing the Avatar movie.

Since PC's are way ahead of consoles on the technology side, simply put if my PC can not produce graphics that looks like the Avatar movie and runs 30-60fps on 1080p resolution, I am sure as heck the consoles will not be able to do this either.
Ones I see games that look like Avatar and the consoles have specs like PCs and can run those games at decent frame rates I will believe the claims. Until then this sounds like utter BS to me, to get the first person shooter console kids to get their panties in the hunch over the next consoles.

SpectralMeat, I don't care what the title of the article is, it's clearly written to get hits. And it's working. The actual guy the article speaks with does not say the graphics will be close to Avatar, he says the lighting will be.
So it's your fault for not reading the damn article, not the fault of the guy making the claim.

This is way anything works around here:
1) A guy says something, based on his experience
2) Some idiot distorts it into a headline that will generate pagehits
3) Blue finds the headline and posts it here, to generate pagehits and discussion (which leads to pagehits)
4) People that don't read the article flip out over what the headline says without putting any critical thought behind it

Saying "the lighting will be close to Avatar" is vague and meaningless. It's nothing to get worked up about. But people will keep getting worked up over "console kids," acting like kids themselves.

And the idea of producing a game with art quality on par with Avatar makes most developers cringe at the development costs, so I doubt it. I still don't think we're going to see as big a spec bump as we normally do.
