Chris Roberts Game Countdown?

The Roberts Space Industries Website features a timer counting down the seconds to a point about 30 days hence, and The Starport makes the case that this countdown will culminate in the reveal of a new game from Chris Roberts, as this seems to belong to Cloud Imperium Games, which Roberts' LinkedIn Profile indicates is a new "skunk works company / project" recently launched by the Wing Commander developer. The site speculates this will be something new in the vein of the Wing Commander/Freelancer/Privateer space combat universe, and they have a teaser image to support this. A slight complication is the indication that at one point this timer was to hit zero today, so it's been reset somewhere along the way. Thanks Verno.

Unfortunately, even those who created worlds couldn't seem to repeat that success after Origin's demise. Would that the conditions that led to greatness be somehow recreated in this modern era.

I LOVED Freelancer. The elegant mouse flight controls made a believer out of this formerly "Joystick or GTFO!!" gamer. The stilted dialog was a downer, and the story should have been more epic, but overall I thought the game was fantastic.

Freelancer 2 would be a dream come true for me, but would possibly make me die of terminal orgasm would be to see the the Tiger's Claw (rebuilt natch) and the Kilrathi make an appearance in it.

For me, Freelancer was disappointing not because it wasn't a great game, but because it was a fair game. It had some elements of a good game - good graphics, good controls, good combat, some interesting exploration. But unlike Wing Commander (1 and 2 at least), it had an utterly forgettable story and cast of characters. That was the real let down for me.

I just went and read the summary of the story on Wikipedia and NOTHING about it seemed even vaguely familiar - yet I played through the whole game on release. That is not a good sign, and a far cry from Wing Commander (1 and 2 - things went downhill after 2 IMO but I'm sure others would disagree.)

Freelancer was good. It just didn't live up to the hype and it could have been better. It pretty much turned out to just be a great game instead of the all time classic we (up to a point in development, anyways) anticipated.

If this thing, whatever it is, turns out to be a space sim in the same style (not a mission based shooter)... it will be hard to wait for.

No. it was a flawed game that was still loved (and is still played), DESPITE that.

On a related note: Privateer 2 was by Chris Roberts brother, not him iirc, and they shouldn't have tacked on the Privateer name. But what do you expect of EA.
Freelancer had shitty controls, stupid story, a stupid way of factions (Germany, China (or was it Japan?), etc. Ugly ships, boring gameplay and a pretty sterile feeling.
Privateer 2 had ugly ships, stupid story and was sterile par excellence.

Freelancer sucked hard, I hope he learned from that.
Also I dont want another Privateer 2 fail. Get back to the roots Chris and make something epic like the WC Series or Privateer 1.

I've tried to get into the X series but every single one of them felt like work and not like I was some Han Soloish spacer just out to make a few credits then getting caught up in an intergalactic shitstorm. No game has done that concept as good as the original Privateer.
