I took your comment of "apologists" to mean those who were apologizing for id's not having included multiplayer in this re-release because it wasn't needed due to the mod community's efforts. And, my point is that those apologists are right. id has given plenty of free Doom to PC gamers. It doesn't need to give us any more. We have all of the multiplayer Doom we need.

Well, no, the apologists aren't right. The "we" who have all the multiplayer we need are also going to be the "we" who already have all the multiplayer we need. The people who would buy this package aren't (necessarily) going to be in the "we". People tend to have a common misconception where if they know something, they assume everyone else does too. But there are likely plenty of people who have no idea about the free multiplayer Doom that's out there.

Frankly, however, I don't see the demand for the package to be very substantial on the PC (or any platform for that matter), so at the end of the day it's probably more of a moot point than anything else. But if they are going to sell it to people, the least they can do is ensure that they are getting their money's worth by including multiplayer support, even if they have to get permission from one of the "free" versions to do so.

I too think this re-release is a console cash-grab and is unnecessary on the PC. I'm certainly not going to buy it. But, it smells more like a Bethesda/Zenimax corporate move to squeeze some money out of id's games since Rage sold poorly than a move by id. I'm only defending id for not including multiplayer on the PC version because we've already got that thanks to the earlier gift of the source code.

Well color me shocked, you got it right. It's exactly 'those who are apologizing for iD' that bugs me. These fuckers are like the Rolling Stones. They are actually quite 'smart' business men in that they know how to milk something that has actually been bled dry ages ago. While I suppose one could give them credit for that, one could also be an aspiring blood sucker just like 'them' too.

Personally I find it to be reprehensible behavior for someone that spawned a whole genre of games(something the stones are not...). They know better than that, and are capable of better than that. But it seems they have grown lazy and no longer care.

I never said it was free. You continue to ignore the last half of my post. Read my first post again. See where I wrote, "All of these games can also still be purchased on the PC inexpensively through digital distribution". I explicitly stated that the games were still for sale as one of the reasons why this re-release is not needed.

They're not selling something free.
No, they are repackaging their existing games and trying to pass them off to PC gamers as something new and improved when they are inferior to what already exists thanks to the source code release and the mod community. That is my point and what I tried to convey in the full text of my original post.

Freedoom is a fan made wad that uses all original content.
Freedoom is replacement wad set for Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 that would best be described as a "Doom-compatible" experience. It is designed to be used with Doom source ports to make them stand-alone games that are compatible with existing Doom 1 & 2 mods. In essence it is a legally free version of Doom 1 & 2.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but only the engine went open source. The actual gameplay did not. So, while you can download the source code, you still need to purchase the .wad to play.
Read my whole post next time as I said as much in the following paragraph that you overlooked. In addition there is Freedoom which is a free replacement version of Doom 1 & 2.

In fact, Doom II, Final Doom and Ultimate Doom are $20 each from id.
or for much less in a Steam bundle or similar sale
The id bundle during every Steam sale always includes these games.

The point is they're still selling it. It isn't free, Freedoom is a fan made wad that uses all original content.

They sell it. $20 on their website. Now they're selling it again. They're not selling something free.

Man the amount of fucking apologists on this site is sickening.
Given the fact that id software has given away the source code to all of its past FPS games for free and no other major game developer has done the same, I'd say that id has nothing to apologize for. The PC market is already well-served with versions of classic Doom that have Internet functionality as every major source port for the game has it. id doesn't need to waste its time recreating the wheel by making another one. It's already given the PC enough classic Doom to last a lifetime.

In all honesty, like the people interested in playing Doom or Doom II on PC are going to bother with this pack.

(Granted, I'd go a step further and say the market for this pack on PC probably is more or less non-existent, but whatever.)
