Black Mesa Source This Month

The Black Mesa Website now offers a timer, counting down to a September 14th release of this modification that will update the gameplay from Half-Life with the Source engine from Half-Life 2. This project has taken more development time than the gap between the first two Half-Life games, which earned it "vaporware awards" from the impatient pundits at Wired in 2009 and 2010, but it seems this long wait is about to come to an end. Here's word from the forums:

We're freaking out over here! It is so exciting to share this news with you!

  • You can now Download the Black Mesa Soundtrack, courtesy of our very own Joel Nielsen, at the very generous price of whatever you want! Enjoy and share!
  • In the near future you'll see our Website, Wiki and Forums all taken down temporarily for renovations.
  • On September 14th you will see the first release of Black Mesa! This will include our re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core. We believe this is a great way to provide a complete-feeling 8-10 hour experience with a solid ending, make our fans happy and help us make the best overall game possible.

We are still working hard on Xen and BMDM, but instead of making you wait we are giving you Black Mesa as soon as it's ready! We're doing our best to help bring the immense vision of this project into reality, and we are very excited for what the future brings!

You'd be wise to learn meaning of ancient Chinese proverb: "He who look Gift Horse in Mouth Usually Is Eaten by Same" Here's another that goes with it, I think: "He who buys xBox has bitter mouth because he has no mods" And one more: "He who has no Steam account is like angry old woman with no shoes who walks on hot coals"...

Typical apologist reply right there. Try to sound a little less cliched, ok? Next you're going to claim I know nothing about taking on a huge modding project. I dare you.

Eight years and it's not finished.

Apologist?...;) What are you smokin'? Like he said, this game mod is *free*--rather than complaining, you should be grateful they are developing it and allowing you to play it for absolutely nothing in return. Of course, you need not play it at all if you don't choose to.

I don't care if it's been 20 years and *not finished*...;) It's a friggin' mod, and it's *free.* What's not to like?

You'd be wise to learn meaning of ancient Chinese proverb: "He who look Gift Horse in Mouth Usually Is Eaten by Same" Here's another that goes with it, I think: "He who buys xBox has bitter mouth because he has no mods" And one more: "He who has no Steam account is like angry old woman with no shoes who walks on hot coals"...

Is that your particular problem? You sound pretty bitter about something--but somehow, complaining about a free game mod as if you'd paid a bundle for it and you'd like a refund is particularly unconvincing, strange, and bizarre.
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

Excellent News! Looking forward to it. I do hope that Xen is completed soon, I don't like the episodic content model of game delivery.

BMDM = Black Mesa Death Match? Personally, I don't really mind if that is missing.

Now all I have to do is wait for Natural Selection 2 ... scree!

I really liked the Xen sequence at the end of Half-Life (okay, the Super Mario/Gordon jumping was a tad annoying) because as awesome as Black Mesa was, one can only spend so much time in it before it becomes old hat. Xen was a perfect and much needed fresh angle, and suitably and deliciously foreign and alien. To me anyway - judging by the near universal dislike of the Xen levels it is clear I am in the distinct minority.

I think the issue wasn't that Xen was different and refreshing - that's a given. The fact it was introduced in the last 30-60 minutes and changed pretty much everything the player knew caused the problems.

It was like eating 7/8s of a meat feat pizza then having the 8th most satisfying slice suddenly replaced with with a deep fried dog turd topped with banana ice cream.

Even if they'd put the dog turd or banana ice cream onto the 8th slice of my comfortable, slightly predictable, pizza I'd probably have eaten it without a problem. But to throw away that last final pizza slice and replace it with a unlikable unknown just wasn't good.

If it were me I would just drop the first part of Interloper and the entire factory map and call it a Xen. The rest of it was pretty enjoyable to me.

Leaving out the Gonarch would be a bad move IMO.

I'm really happy about this too - couldn't give a crap about xen not being there as I selectively wipe that part from my memory anyway.

Black Mesa was one of those sites I'd check every 3 months or so just in case there was an update but I have to admit I was starting to get sceptical.

I'm hoping they're releasing it without xen to jog Valve into giving them input and finally correcting the final act which, lets face it, Valve fucked up royally the first time around. A bit like ME3's extended ending but hopefully actually fixing the problems.

As for the remake/re-imagining thing I'm also more then happy to give it a go. Bit's of HL didn't work - jumping from crate to crate over a deadly drop in first person springs to mind. They call it a remake and they can't change a thing - call it a re-imagining and they can subtly remove the sucky parts whilst staying 99% authentic to the original.

I totally lost interest in this when they changed it from a "re-make" to a "re-imagination", which means it won't be true to the original game. ...And without Xen (like it or not) it's not complete.

Ditto.

How are they going to distribute this? Some source mods you can download directly from Steam where others have to be downloaded and installed to the sourcemods dir. I hope Valve lets them put this up on Steam, otherwise the download speeds for the first several days will suck.

Valve has a bunch of free user created mods for thier games in thier library, I'm pretty sure they will be all over this.
