The International 2012 Begins

Valve announces the commencement of The International 2012, their second annual Dota 2 championship. The festivities are being broadcast through this page. Word is:

The event takes place today through Sunday at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA.

The tournament is being broadcast worldwide, free of charge, with play-by-play commentary in multiple languages, the ability to view the games from multiple angles, and more - all in full HD quality - from a dedicated client (available here: http://www.dota2.com/international/mainevent/watch/). A browser-based broadcast of the action is also available.

Meanwhile, those in the Seattle area this weekend attending PAX Prime may attend The International, free of charge with a PAX Badge (based upon space availability in the Hall).

Imho Dota makes for a pretty terrible spectator sport.

Your girlfriend can watch a Starcraft match and get the gist of it and it generally ends with a cataclysmic battle. In Dota you're watching 20 min of farming with slowly accumulating advantages (please no counter-examples. This is a about the general situation not exceptions) and now and then there's a small skirmish that's incomprehensible without knowledge of 108 heroes and a gazillion items.

What a poorly chosen name. "The International"

The international what? International Everything? Who are you to make such a claim by using such name.

What else, of course?

Consoles? I owned two: a Pong clone and an Atari 2600. And that's it.

A little late on the news article. They have been playing preliminary games online since last weekend. I've enjoyed watching the games even though USA/CAN teams aren't nearly as good as the top Chinese teams. Anyways, they're playing for a $1.6 million dollar prize pool so I figured that this would be a bigger deal than people give it. Plus the spectator client is free in Steam allowing you to view the games live with commentary.
