Natural Selection 2 Exosuit Reveal; Beta Access Ending

This new trailer offers a reveal of the Exosuit from Natural Selection 2, a new set of power armor that will soon be added to the beta version of Unknown Worlds' upcoming action/strategy sequel. They also warn that only about a week remains to gain instant access to the beta by preordering, saying: "As we speed towards an imminent but as yet unannounced release, we are opening up a Steam Store page on September 4 for pre-orders. On that day, instant beta access will cease. So if you would like to get in on the Exosuit carnage before release day, head on over to naturalselection2.com to pre-order!"

This is the first 100% true PC game to be released in a long, long time

This is complete gibberish.

Really? From someone who doesn't have the game? Do please point to me any recent game that supplies the full source code to all modders then or are you going to keep saying silly things just because?

He doesn't have to own the game to call this gibberish, as he's not saying anything about the game. There have been plenty of "100% true PC games" released all the time. Counter Strike Global Ops was released a week ago. How is that less of a "true PC game."

Hell, just the term "100% true PC game" is pretty much gibberish.

Fully moddable with source code of game given, server files given, fully customizable, fully compatible with all input devices, not holding hands.

Sorry but it's a 100% PC game, in the sense that it has all the PC features one could ask from a PC game, features that were common PC features once, from mods to server files to fully customizable to console line. That's what I consider a true PC game, much like CS:GO almost is.

That, and many fans already got it much cheaper years ago. It's come a long way from Alpha.

A long way indeed. The devs did hint they'll price it lower than $35 though, hopefully they manage to hit a sweet spot like $15 or $20 at most.

The game is looking pretty sweet. I've been following the regular updates and the game has made a lot of progress over the past year.

However, $35 for an indie, multiplayer-only game is insane in today's market. The average joe is not going to pay $35 for an indie game, especially one that's multiplayer-only. In addition, with the quality of F2P games quickly rising, the incentive to actually pay money for multiplayer games is quickly diminishing. If Unknown Worlds wants NS2 to have a large community, they're going to need to drop the price to $15 or less. That's the sweet spot for indie games and what most people are willing to pay. Even then, charging anything is a risk. See Shattered Horizons, Lead & Gold, Metal Drift, Gotham City Impostors, etc, for examples of how non-F2P multiplayer-only games fare in the current market.

And will it also be like in NS1 at the end that if you have a good commander, aliens have zero chance in winning?

Yeah playing aliens was great until end game fuck you jetpacks.

Well a new CS and NS a year after Duke Nukem, I think the constellations might finally be aligning for HL3...

I loathed the Half Life engine and could not understand why they discarded the net code from the original Quake 2 basis,

Slight nitpick: the HL engine was actually Quake 1 based. Valve was one of the first developers to license the Quake engine (along with 3Drealms for Duke Nukem Forever and Ion storm for Daikatana.) By the time Quake 2 came out, I believe valve had already significantly reworked the engine inhouse, so unlike the other developers, they never switched to Quake 2.

I preordered it last christmas or the year before, I forget which. I did it because they were doing 2 Keys for 30 dollars or some shit.

Gave one to my buddy and our initial outing with it was poor. Laggy, barely ran, couldn't play half the time, typical beta.

It has DRASTICALLY improved over the course of the past year. Very playable. Very much like the original Natural Selection where if your commander sucks you're going to lose. Forces good teamwork. Engine looks and runs great now. We've played a few games here and there. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I mean, dont get me wrong, I am really waiting for this game, but I also know how screwed up the balance was in NS1.

I remember that after some time I loathed the Half Life engine and could not understand why they discarded the net code from the original Quake 2 basis, which was probably the best part. Stupid move there, Valve.
The thing is that it was too slow for Natural Selection, if you were a quick fade it would be entirely possible for you to die after you blinked around two corners already.
When they announced that they were going to use their own engine I was relieved because I thought they were going to do a good job.

Well, the netcode is basically even worse than in the original Half Life. I literally stood in front of a non-moving marine (as a Skulk) and bit him three or four times and not one single attack connected (we both had a normal ping) and have seen similar things happen to other players.
Same thing happens when you try to shoot a Skulk as a marine. The bullets do not seem to hit. :/

On the other hand Natural Selection 2 is the game that Natural Selection wanted to be. Natural Selection should have been a slightly scary, dark game where you had this asymmetric constellation of teams and while the latter part was still true it just wasn't that dark or scary (especially because people cranked up the brightness in competitive games anyway).
Unfortunately the movement is not as smooth in Natural Selection 2 as it is in Natural Selection 1. For some reason they decided not to implement bunny hopping which was really fun when you played as a Skulk (and other glitches, like wall-running as a marine etc.) so it makes this game less competitive than Natural Selection in general (at least to me).

But the atmosphere is much better. The lighting is really good, especially when you go into a dark room with your flashlights because the power node was killed and try to find those skulks. So if they actually manage to smooth this game out then it's going to be really good, it already is.

Fortunately most of the changes they made are decent and pretty fun, cannot really complain. I will miss the Fade's blink but the current ability is kind cool, too. Much more like the blink from 1.04.

Still needs some performance improvements since the game isn't smooth to many people. Right now though it's the best asymmetrical FPS on the PC and a bloody great game. I've recently returned to the game and am having a blast.

Tis could be the biggest hidden gem of this year, if it gets released this year that is.

Jesus this is still in development?

I played Natural Selection 1 as a Half-life mod like... 8 years ago. And they had just announced NS2.

As of this moment it is now feature complete and Steam pre-orders will go up soon according to the devs. I guess the game entered the late beta stage of performance improvements and balance improvements.

I'm interested in hearing some feedback/reviews of this one too. Looks promising, but I haven't tried the beta personally.

I am interested in this game. I will not be pre-ordering or paying for beta. If it's reasonable post release I will buy it on Steam. I am hoping for some feedback here on Blue's as well as a reliable review such as Out of Eight.

This game already has a strong modding and competitive scene. Competitive matches are played in a weekly basis.

This is the first 100% true PC game to be released in a long, long time and it has come a long way. Right now it's my favorite multiplayer game and it really is quite something. Lovers of AvP will love this game.
