Clockwork Empires Announced

Gaslamp Games announces Clockwork Empires, a steampunk city-building strategy game the Dungeons of Dredmor developer plans to bring to Windows, OS X, and Linux. This will include multiplayer support as well as solo play, but as they pointedly note, non of that always on DRM that may or may not be present in other such games: "No always-online DRM requirement, unlike certain other games we don’t want to mention. You know who you are and your mothers are very disappointed." Here's a bit on the game itself:

The Clockwork Empire is expanding! Brave people, seeking glory and wealth, are setting forth for uncharted lands in search of fame and fortune. This is a new age of Science – fearless naturalists, clever tinkerers, and brilliant inventors hold sway over the imagination of the common folk, wielding voltaic energies and constructing chromed brass clockwork engines. It is an age of The Arts – poets lie expiring on every street corner, crying for Reform and more laudanum, while the Empire Times spews forth from the great presses of the Capitol, filled with stories of inspiring hubris and adventure from The Colonies. It is an age of Trade – the many arms of the Imperial Chartered Antipodean Trading Company lurch across the oceans like the limbs of a commodity-crazed octopus, dredging untapped markets for wealth and glory. It is an age of Politics – scheming agents of the Empire skulk through the slums and grottoes of the colonies, dodging anarchist schemes and cultists’ rituals, and fulfilling secretive missions on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen. Meanwhile, in the Capitol, favours are curried in the Houses of Parliament and the Panopticon between the artistocratic Lords and the rising classes of Industrial Barons.

Reads: "Has DRM!"

Not having the most retarded form of DRM merely means you're not the most retarded developer, which is hardly a glowing endorsement for your work.

Well for this type of game it'll have to have some nice graphics or it'll suck. Love the concept though.

Did you play DoD?

I believe that's why he's making the point...

I dunno...he makes that point about a lot of games...

Yeah, but it's not like games like Sleepy Dogs has no budget to speak of. I rag on those because it's a console game first and foremost. These guys are indie so they get the slack. However, for this style of game I really won't be interested unless it actually looks nice. Hell, even City of Steam as a broswer game does a good job of a Steampunk city.

This kinda brings up my confusion as to why there hasn't been any kind of Minecraft-type games that flesh out that type of gameplay? I had thought by now we'd be besieged with knockoffs seeing how good Minecraft itself did. Besides the excellent-idea, horribly flawed execution that is StarForge (yes, I know it's an 'alpha' but damn..) and the 2D types of Terraria and Cortex Commando, there's really nothing else out there. WTF? I want a Minecraft with piss-my-pants graphics and physics with guns and massive NPC interaction...like a 3D SimCity, Minecraft/GTA4-5, please? Thank you...

Yeah, after DoD, I'll definitely check out what they do next...

Quite a leap though, from a rogue-like to a full city builder.

Considering how incredibly deep that roguelike was, it's not much of a leap at all.

I have to disagree with you here. It is a great and fun game but it is a begginer's game to roguelike games. NetHack, Angband, ADOM, Dwarf Fortress, etc are all way more deep than DoD. It's still a damn fun game, I just think it's a good first step towards rogue-likes for people who never played one even with all the 3 expansions.

Well now, didn't see this one coming. A city-builder on the Dredmor setting? Sold!

Love the little quip towards SimCity5 DRM too.

A steampunk city-builder. This one has potential to be something truly special.
