Actually, the IP behind the world itself is worth something. R.A. Salvatore and others spent a great deal of time creating an entire world and characters just for the game. None of which were anywhere in Reckoning. Elves? Dwarves? FUCKING INSPIRED. I was a big fan of Salvatore when he first started out with his Drow series, but he wasn't exactly original here as he just built stereotypical characters and story lines in the Forgotten Realms universe which was already established. He did a lot to grow that universe though.
A novel, TV show or movie written by R.A. Salvatore? Sure. You have my interest. An MMO where he designed the world and the characters? Wasn't that EQ? How could it possible be any different?
Today I learned R.A. Salvatore wrote the bot chat lines for Quake III. Thank you, Wikipedia. |

I snagged a couple of servers from a business liquidation for less than 10% of their retail value and they were less than a year old.
So, if you're in the area...you could score some cool deals on equipment. |

Amalur was pretty standard and unremarkable, I'm not sure anyone cares about the world or characters. The creation of it might have cost money but the value is determined by what the public will pay for its products. The only reason Amalur shipped 1 million copies was due to EAs distribution muscle and an expensive advertising campaign. |

As for other assets, yeah yeah, office furniture and work PCs simply don't bring a dime. They'll be lucky if they make a hundred grand off the whole shebang.
So unless the company had stacks of company cars and expensive toys, Rhode Island is still going a large, large chunk of that debt themselves.
Creston The government always needs that sort of crap anyway so they may as well use it. As for the code they should easily be able to get a few mil for it. Who knows, maybe can someone can do something interesting with it. |

It's really sort of heartbreaking to see this happen; I only hope Salvatore can either get the rights to his characters back or a publisher that's friendly to him picks them up so he can continue to write for it. |

Probably because they were blowing 5 mil a month on coke and hookers, heavily into nepotism, etc. |

this one is still just crazy to me.. how the hck did kurt schilling go so wrong? he put in like 20 million and then they got another 75 million and they cant release an MMO in 5 years or whatever it was. the whole point he formed 38 was to make a freaking mmo. even a decent FTP mmo will make money these days.
i don't know why.. but this one actually makes me sad. probably because of the interviews with kurt i watched a few years ago. |
