Broken Sword Kickstarter

A new Kickstarter campaign is underway for Broken Sword - the Serpent's Curse Adventure, a new installment in Revolution Software's Broken Sword series coming to Windows, OS X, and mobiles next year. A couple of months ago Revolution's Charles Cecil said an announcement was near, which is now confirmed to be the first new game in this adventure series since 2006. There's a trailer where Cecil and animated protagonist George Stobbart pitch the project, which is returning to the hand-drawn 2D roots of the series. Here's the announcement:

Revolution Software today unveils the first details of the latest game in the phenomenal Broken Sword series – and invites fans to join the adventure from the very beginning by supporting the project through the Kickstarter crowd-funding site. Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse will be the fifth title in the much-loved series, reuniting George Stobbart and Nico Collard for their most explosive adventure yet.

The game will be available on PC, Mac, iOS and Android in early 2013 – but fans can begin their adventure now by making a pledge on Kickstarter.

For $15, a digital copy of the game will be made available on release, along with a host of bonus material. Additional rewards are available at higher tiers with the opportunity to own original Broken Sword artwork, signed game design documents, personalised drawings from the art team, personalised messages from the game’s actors, a mention in the game, a fine array of merchandise clothing and even an invitation to the project wrap party in one of the game’s exotic locations.

“The process of game development has previously been remote from our fans,” says Charles Cecil, managing director, Revolution Software. “By self publishing, we now have a direct relationship with our audience – a position that we value enormously.”

“We’re delighted that the latest Broken Sword title is to be the first of our adventures that we can take with our fans. By pledging support now, we’ll be going on a journey which will end when the opening credits roll – it’s going to be excellent.”

“Crucially, Kickstarter support will enable us to create – for the very first time – an adventure game with total creative freedom.”

To coincide with the announcement, Revolution has released a teaser video, outlining the opening moments of the game and offering clues to additional characters and content, which is available on the game’s Kickstarter page http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/165500047/broken-sword-the-serpents-curse-adventure

Broken Sword on the DS was actually kind of great. These games seem to translate really well to touch-sensitive mobile platforms.

The kickstarter I'm really excited about is the one for re-release of Horror on the Orient Express, one of the classic Chaosium tabletop campaigns for Call of Cthulhu:

Chaosium kickstarter

It was initiated during GenCon last week and was only asking for $20,000 so they could include high-quality maps and handouts in the box. It got funded within 24 hours and is currently up to $50,000. The box set should be something pretty special.

Funcom needs to stop making MMOs and Kickstart Longest Journey 3.

Ragnar Tornquist was today retweeting a bunch of people who were saying that he should do exactly that. I don't know if given Funcom's recent troubles, that it was some kind of subtle hint of something. I really hope it was. Despite the moon logic puzzles, The Longest Journey is still me favourite game of all-time for story.

That, and Dreamfall had a completely unsatisfying cliffhanger ending. It's clear that they were planning for another sequel but apparently that fell through.

Absolutely correct. It's so easy, just do what you do best and it's definitely not MMOs.

The last game was pretty shoddy but I still like this series. It's not a remake it's a continuation. I'm really glad they are going back to 2d, the 3d in their games haven't been that effective. As for mobile platforms, the broken sword series already has a long mobile history. My first playthrough of the first game was on GBA, and it actually worked pretty well

After you get burnt a few times on this prefunding kick, you will think twice about who you fund with a kickstarter because a bunch of these kickstarters will never generate anything.

It is actually far more risky than buying a prerelease.

Undoubtedly. However, so far I have been burned zero times yet. Admittedly, I have also funded a grand total of 2 games, so...

As long as people are smart, I think the risk level is acceptable when compared to the kind of games that you CAN get out of this.

It's a 2d adventure game. How horrible could it be?

Duh, my bad. I got confused between this and Sword and Blade...

Hmmm, watches video. Sold. $15 level. I was hoping that the $25 level would include a poster or picture or something physical. It doesn't look like you get anything physical until the $100 level.

The reward stuff is kind of confusing. They start throwing in so many digital assets that trying to understand the difference between $25 and $50 is still unclear to me. I do see that you get one Gog Game for $25 and then all the gog games they have for $50.

The art style in this looks very cool. Happy to fund them.

Yes, and Lori and Corey Cole are doing a kickstarter end of October as well.

I can't wait until that one gets rolling!

Gah. Another Adventure game remake. Well, at least fans of those games are seeing some love after so many dead years.
