Ubisoft: PC Piracy Rate 93-95%

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot gives GamesIndustry International his outlook on free-to-play games as a way of combating PC piracy, explaining the difficulties presented by serving an audience they perceive to be 93-95% thieves:

"We want to develop the PC market quite a lot and F2P is really the way to do it," said the French CEO. "The advantage of F2P is that we can get revenue from countries where we couldn't previously - places where our products were played but not bought. Now with F2P we gain revenue, which helps brands last longer.

"It's a way to get closer to your customers, to make sure you have a revenue. On PC it's only around five to seven per cent of the players who pay for F2P, but normally on PC it's only about five to seven per cent who pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It's around a 93-95 per cent piracy rate, so it ends up at about the same percentage. The revenue we get from the people who play is more long term, so we can continue to bring content."

I should send him a list of my inventory of games that I have spent probably tens of thousands on over several decades of gaming. Lets see of that asshole spits in my eye again pulling ridiculous figures out of his arse.

Once again, here's motherfuckin' Ubisoft, blowing a bunch of lies and propaganda to hurt the PC market and it's gamers. I don't know what sort of vendetta Ubisoft has or why, but I'm sick of thier fucking bullshit.

I've been a PAYING PC gamer for nearly 30 years and I don't appreciate being lumped in with the small percentage of scumbags out there who distribute cracked games. Of course, what can you expect from a cocksucking French hater like Yves Guillemot?

It pisses me off that FarCry 3 is an Ubisoft title because I'm seriously... SERIOUSLY... considering boycotting all Ubisoft games, including FarCry 3!!!

Hey UBI

I used to buy your games, until you started putting utter crap like starforce and always on DRM into them.

... and not to mention the ones you released and never fixed.

I either refuse to buy your products, or in the case of the games you never fixed, will pirate the sequel if I bought the original non-functional version.

UBI has ripped me off consistently for the past decade. I have no qualms about returning the favour you utter tunics.

I haven't bought NOR PLAYED an Ubisoft game since the DRM-Free Prince of Persia (2008).

BECAUSE of their DRM.

So, if 93% - 95% is truly pirating their games (which is probably a number being pulled out of their ass)... that's because the rest of us gave up on them altogether, and won't buy an "always on-line single player game".

I agree. And, I haven't pirated any games either. Screw that moron Yves and his bs company Ubifail.

I want to see the basis of the 93-95% piracy rate. What is his source? I want to see a robust and scientifically rigorous and methodologically sound study.

The 93-95% rate seems absurd on its face. How can a maximum of 7% pay for your stuff and you can remain in business?

Like others said, that 7% is probably exclusively in the Western nations, and the others are from developing nations.

I, too, would like to see how he gets it, but I don't think it's too far fetched. I just think it's pretty meaningless.

He might want to bump that number up a bit after this statement. Say... to 99%.

Not that more people will pirate his crapware, but I'm sure less people will support Ubisoft when you basically call your fan base a bunch of kleptomaniacs.

Exactly. I'll take a stab at the math. Steam alone has 40m paying customers. So let's say that's your 5% baseline right there. If 95% of people are pirating, is he saying there are 800 million people playing PC games world wide? And 760 million of those are pirating? Bittorrent has 150 million active users, but not all of them play PC games of course. Looking at this list, the most pirated games are about 3-4 million each.

Certainly piracy is an issue, but overstating it just hurts your cause.

Well, your math begins flawed, anyway. 40MM paying customers on Steam, but they don't buy every game. More importantly, they don't buy every game they play. Since the venn diagram of "pirate" and "paying customer" are pretty heavily overlapped, you can't make any estimate of actual market size.

Nor can you say anything about there being 150MM torrent users. Again, no one really cares about "total users." Let's say there were only 6 users, and 5 bought 1 game and 1 pirated 95... suddenly you have Yves figures exactly.

Lastly, you're only looking at one distribution method. I'd imagine that most pirating in developing countries is still done via physical copies.

Well, perhaps Ubisoft should have more $1 sales... That seems to be about as much as their PC games are worth to a lot of people.

It sounds like he's doing what all CEO's do when trying to explain their poor performance to investors...they deflect. No it's obvious not his fault. It's that virtually all PC gamers are thieves is the real problem. No new consoles, certainly has nothing to do with him. So how can anyone expect him to meet or exceed projections when its the obvious fault of everyone and everything else but him. So obviously he deserves his bonus!

No, it's not. Piracy should not be MY fucking problem. When I buy a game, I shouldn't automatically be considered to be a pirate.

It has always baffled me how obstinately opposed gaming forums always seem to be that piracy is a real problem for not just the guys making money off of the games but for PC gamers as a result.

No, it's not. Piracy should not be MY fucking problem. When I buy a game, I shouldn't automatically be considered to be a pirate. I put 50 or 60 bucks down for a game, so therefore I should be allowed to play it without having to hope that the server isn't down for some fucking bullshit reason, or that the DRM got upgraded with the latest patch and now doesn't recognize my computer, or that it won't install because of the DRM or yadda yadda yadda.

Piracy is NOT MY PROBLEM. And it has always baffled me that there are apparently still people who seem to think it's perfectly fine for publishers to take THEIR problem, and foist it off on US, the customers.

(notwithstanding the fact that I am not a Ubisoft customer, since I refuse to buy their game that have their horseshit DRM on it.)
