Diablo III Patch Rolling Out

The Diablo III Forums have word that Blizzard's action/RPG is currently offline in North America for maintenance as the promised new version 1.04 patch is installed, bringing the new Paragon endgame to the action/RPG sequel (no word on whether this patch will fix the Server Status Page which could be helpful at times like if it worked properly). The post includes the full version 1.04 patch notes to check out while waiting for the game to come back online, which is currently slated for around 4:00 pm EDT today. The European servers are scheduled to start updating tonight and the Asian servers will be patched tomorrow, and this will prevent global play until they are all once again running the same version.

I'd say you can see from what's going on in these forums as well as how desperate Blizzard is getting that the player base died off after a couple weeks. A lot of Blue's posters either refused to buy the game, or stopped playing (I'm in the second category).

Xfire data is just icing on the cake.

So now they're just killing things to pick up trash.

This is one of the core problems with D3. They did a lot to justify the always-online requirement, only to have most of it blow up in their faces. The AH breaks the loot, their own stats prove that multiplayer is in the minority, and the 8+ hr downtimes just to patch the game are ridiculous.

I disagree... I think most people took (or didn't take) it because it was cool... Most of the high end builds had the obvious invulnerability (I forget the name), but I took SSS for invul, and the damage was cool : )

Meh, I think the damage was really tame for an ability with such a long cooldown. SSS was pretty critical for many Hardcore builds where damage is secondary to survival and the invuln frames got you out of bad situations. This brings the damage up to par and really opens up some skill loadouts for softcore as well. Either way it's a welcome change thankfully!

downtime stuff

I agree it's a bit puzzling if you consider Diablo 2 didn't need this sort of regular downtime on a weekly basis. I wonder if we'll ever get to a point where the servers won't be down a large chunk of a day every week.

On another note...
-Shielding monsters will no longer shield if they are the last monster left in the area, and only one monster in a given pack can be shielded at a time

I like this, but mostly because I fought a group once that was shielding and frozen, and bugged (not an official affix), where it would shield for 5s, unshield for 1-2s and shield right back up... And seemingly drop an unusually high number of frozen 'orbs'. Fight took me like 5 minutes because every time I was able to attack, it was shielded, and 'every' time it wasn't shielded, I had to move from frozen orbs.

Good times ; )

They saw the RMAH as the replacement for the monthly fee.

You know...this is a perfect F2P game. If this game had been free I can see this whole system having a lot more success. You can grind all you want and earn your gear that way or you can pay and get the gear you want now.

But this pay $60 to play a F2P game is a horrid experience.

Holy crap with the buffing... Some of these are insane... I already thought this was an awesome ability, but:

Seven-Sided Strike
Weapon damage increased from 777% to 1777% over 7 hits
Skill Rune - Sudden Assault
Weapon damage increased from 1007%to 2309% over 7 hits
Skill Rune - Several-Sided Strike
The 2 extra hits now also increase the total duration of the spell (which increases the amount of time that you are invulnerable)
Skill Rune - Fulminating Onslaught
Weapon damage of each explosion increased from 111% to 254%

Edit: And 3 very nice 'quality of life' improvements...
-The text color of gems, potions, crafting pages and tomes dropped on the ground has been changed from white to light blue
-The maximum stack size of gems has been increased from 30 to 100
-The gem drop sound effect is now more noticeable

The patch errata is the most interesting section of the patch notes. A SHITLOAD of small bugs have been added with this patch. Im thinking that its rushed because of the dumbass FUCK THAT LOSER comment.

Nah it was scheduled for this week long before he made the comments. Diablo 3 had a really good release window but its pretty crowded these days. I was going to reinstall this but Guild Wars 2 is in three days and Sleeping Dogs is tiding me over until then Assuming I get bored of either then Borderlands 2 comes out and Dishonored and so on. Oh well, at least there is no sub fee so I can just check back in whenever.

And that, sir, may very well be the REAL final nail in the coffin of the RMAH! Many in the gaming community have been worried that the success of Diablo3 might cause other publishers to look at the "always online" and RMAH aspects of Diablo3 and copy them. I think it would be very hard to argue that this Blizzard team (coming from WoW backgrounds) were looking to replicate WoW-type recurring income without a subscription fee (that may have caused even fanbois to esssplode!). They saw the RMAH as the replacement for the monthly fee.

The sentiment you have expressed is the bane of that model. Hopefully enough other gamers are like you to the point where Blizzard (and the other publishers watching) decides that RMAH is not a never-ending fountain of cash. Maybe this will help kill that model of game-development.

If you want to milk folks with a monthly fee, have the balls to do it in the open...

But every F2P game and many other games with no monthly sub do the same thing.

You don't need a valid source. It's pretty obvious just from looking around at what's been happening and what people have been saying. All the heat going on. Then, word of mouth travels to those that don't visit forums or gaming sites, and then they will stop playing because their friends stopped. A ripple effect.

edit: and it's easy to assume that 85% of the playerbase for D3 are the same people that grew up with D1/D2, and they all have expectations that were not met. In fact, they are realizing that they were simply taken advantage of.

I don't know if this validates the statement, but the Xfire data seems to indicate a big drop-off in players.

Some quick sources:
http://beta.xfire.com/games/d3
"Diablo 3 Player Count Drops Big Time, Consumers are Fed Up"
"Diablo 3 active player base sees a decline according to Xfire stats"

I know that I gave up on it about 5 weeks ago after putting in over 150 hours and getting one character up to inferno difficulty.

& to expand on Source, It's also common sense, a human trait that is severely lacking in today's day and age. Google and Facebook don't teach you that.

Common sense has nothing to do with asking for a source to a claim which is being stated as a fact rather than an opinion without information to back it up. It's called fact checking and this isn't Fox News where they expect us to take everything at face value.

That said, if you're talking about the xfire player drop, it's definitely there and has been the central point of focus when it comes to pointing out the drop in players. While it does have some validity as a tool (the only one we have) to measure a player base, not everyone uses xfire. Honestly, I don't know anyone of my friends who have it but that obviously doesn't mean nobody uses it.

As for the decline of public games, sure, that went down by a fair margin within the first month but that doesn't include private games so, again, it doesn't provide an overall view of the total players.

Don't get me wrong, I personally think there has been a decline of players beyond those who use xfire but there is really no way to tell just how many. All we can do is speculate on numbers through extrapolation since Blizzard doesn't need to provide feedback on their active player base like they do with WoW since it's not on a subscription-based game to hype shareholders or players.

I would like to see this 85% source though.

I'd really like to know what their justification is for capping MF at 300%.

Seems that they don't see anyway to stop people from doing the whole swap armor tactic to fight with maximum power at one second then max gold/magic find at the next second. Rather than give the "elites" this advantage they just make it irrelevant. Most of the hardcore will hit that level 100 cap and have the max gold/magic stat so there won't be anymore concern about some players getting far more drops than other players if this tactic is used.

They took away the incentive to armor swap. Sounds like it will still be useful at the lower levels but once you're up at lvl 50 I'd guess that it starts just wasting a stat on your items.

The alternative was to have some timer installed like you do when you change spells so you had to sit there and wait if you wanted to swap...which could cause a lot of other issues. Armor swapping to deal with different types of enemies is probably something they wanted to make sure was possible.

c) appease the angry mob that is the entire BNET forum, while Blizzard gets to work right away on a much needed story re-write via Necromancer expansion, which for faith restoration, should be a free gift from Blizzard. If I were Mike, I wouldn't think twice about this.

but most of all, I am curious to do some epic damage with my 2H Barb, that already possesses a godly damage stat, now it's going up to 700% on rend, lol, reinstalling is worth it just to see that.

Why do you think more folks will migrate towards the RMAH? Sounds like more drops and better loot with negate this...

Very simple peps will rush to level 100 and to do that they need all NOW and were do you find it....right at BlizzRMAH they fooled peps once and they will do it again , and peps will jump right into the RMAH hole..peps are sooo easy to fool...ehm some are

They did it to make Paragon levels actually mean something and have a purpose other than just distracting you while they finish making the game. When you are Paragon 100, you won't need any Magic/Gold find on your gear because you will be capped and can instead focus on other types of attributes. The game is about farming. It makes sense that they would cap your efficiency of farming the same way in WoW they cap your Dodge so that you still have a chance of taking some damage.

more drops, yes, better loot, marginally than before, but the elite set items and epic Lengendaries, only at RMAH, as were before. Blizzard can and do, what they want, the entire game is just designed this way.

I too was skeptical, I don't have a valid source, but I only speak for myself and my own gut instinct, that, I played Diablo 1 and 2, and really tried hard to want to love 3 the same way. Anyone with enough gaming time under their belts, have become disenchanted with Diablo3. Since I returned from vacation , computerless for 3 weeks, I really need to be dragged back onto my modern workstation to want to play D3 again, even with 1.04.

& to expand on Source, It's also common sense, a human trait that is severely lacking in today's day and age. Google and Facebook don't teach you that.

yes, new drops for new stats, but I have a current 2H that was worth 20 Million Gold in 1.03, that I snagged luckily? at a buy it now, on a newly listed item for 400K. +11 attack speed, +260 STR + 150% DMG, and already has 1100K Base Damage. It will work with the new and improved! 1.04 Rend, and Hammer of Ancients.

Curious to see what the new drops are, but I will judge only after a months time, as I play no more than 2 hours nightly, and am already in Act 3 inferno (just started, and wickedly hard)

took be 15 tries to finally get Belial down in Act2. I have only 4,000 elite kills and 150 hours of played time, and own 3 legendary items, and permabanned from D3 forums 6 weeks ago, for having stated that the next Blizzcon keynote presentation is going to be held behind bulletproof smoke mirrored glass, but I kid. I'm the type of guy that stops his car on the highway, to set free a trapped fly from my windshield wiper.

Oh, it's because the hardcores whine to Blizzard about how it unbalances the game and they probably feed Blizzard 5 pages of technical reason as to how it unbalances the game. So, Blizzard goes and fixes it.

But, in most cases, Blizzard will cap something so that as a result you end up playing more. Playing more than you should normally have to.
