11. Re: Replay: Deus Ex Aug 21, 2012, 07:54 Raptor

I don't think I've ever had to use the "hardest" difficulty to make the game a bit less easy.
Press button to perform takedown with no other melee options? Commonly called sandwich gameplay I believe and not a very favored design option.

And story/dialogue/writing depth wise it was about as deep as console gamers can take I suppose.
The big part in the story was transhumanism - yet there were no meaningful dialogue to be found (I recall the press conversense vaguely). Some interesting E-mails, but that was it.
I can still quite vividly recall some of the conversations in Dx, unfortunately none from DxHR. Same for the characters I guess.

Yes the game was well done and I also don't recall any real competition for it. But as a Dx game for me it still came short in a lot of other segments, which it seems are not very important these days due to the lack of attention span and required oversimplifying to appeal to masses.

I don't think I have any qualms calling DX:HR the game of last year. I can't think of any that held my attention the same way. I put far more hours into several other games due to the multiplayer, but man, DX:HR was really, really well done.

That Warren Spector commentary is...insightful. Deus Ex apparently was a fluke. A genius fluke, but wow, we're lucky that we got the game like we did.

I used to say "This is why it's been so hard to succesfully make another Deus Ex", but the guys in Montreal proved that it actually CAN be done.

No they didn't.
They proved what a Deus Ex game will be if you try to copy a formula that worked because there weren't rules.
Dx3 tried to simplify too much by making the game more "user friendly"
So what you had was a great shell with a lot of stuff made into quick time action prompts which removed a lot of the emergent gameplay that made Dx special.

It was just too clean, too simplified and a bit yellow.

Wait what?

I remember more or less *no* QTEs. If you mean the takedowns and shit, I don't see how a quick cut scene destroys "emergent" gameplay.

And most of the "emergent" gameplay in the original DX was AI bugs that were either annoying or hilarious.

Yeah, they kinda lucked into stuff there. They themselves considered some of the systems in the game to be plain broken, but they released it anyway, because, well, it's the gaming industry, and lo and behold, people loved just about every part of it.

I used to say "This is why it's been so hard to succesfully make another Deus Ex", but the guys in Montreal proved that it actually CAN be done.

It's sad that Warren has gone half crazy with whining about how carmack should write AI, and how working for Disney offers chances at Redemption, and whatever other cuckoo crap he's been spouting. He USED to make great games...

Not to beat up on those who just lost their jobs but honestly, what else could they have expected? The service was dead from almost from the very start.

If the article's numbers (1600 concurrent users) are true, that means the number of employees on staff was 12% of the service's users. That's utterly pathetic, and obviously unsustainable by any metric.

Funny, cause if you asked ANYONE from ANY gaming site - they would have told you it would fail pretty damn quick.

It's the future of gaming!

*giggles*

I love how Perlman kept bleating that they had "millions" of subscribers. I guess they considered "anyone who has ever accidentally visited our webpage" a subscriber?

Millions of subscribers, and 1600 concurrent users? And then you have 8000 servers, and those 1600 users STILL had a shitty experience. Ergo, Latin, cloud gaming is bullshit. Die in a fucking fire, entire concept.
