I'd go so far as to say $500/yr can easily keep you in the high-end, if you already have a good platform to work with (good case, monitor, sound card).
High-end meaning that every game is playable on max settings with a bit of AA (real AA, not the vaseline-effect shader ones).
Soon when we're @ 4000x2000 resolutions I dont think AA will even matter as much really..
