Edit. I have no idea why url codes never work on blues for me. That's games as a service, not renting. You're buying access to crappy old games, like CSI.
Here's a direct question about renting games:
"You can't rent PC games. Most PC games are for purchase only. There are quite a few PC games you can download and play for free in the Unlimited PC Play section."
Also asked here "Gamefly doesn't rent PC games, so if you only have a PC, you probably wouldn't benefit from the service."
Really, a whole string of people asking and being told "Gamefly doesn't do this. Old pc games or not, it's still essentially renting them. Just out of curiosity do you work for EA or Activision? It always amazes me how much you tend to go out of your way to defend publishers. I fail to see how saying they won't rent games is defending them.
Seriously. And the other day you said I defended them when I was calling them stupid.
Maybe your comprehension sucks? Or maybe you think anything less than "TH3se GuY5 r N4Z1s!!!" is defending them. |

And, PC rentals would be great, but why should streaming be the only way to accomplish it? There are plenty of DRM schemes that require an always online connection, they could make a full installable client that is only authorized to work during the rental period. That would be the only application that could justify always online DRM in a single player game. Because I don't want to download 30GB of Max Payne 3 to be able to play it for thirty minutes. The whole point of streaming is that games are INSTANTLY playable. If all I want to do is demo a game it'd take far more bandwidth to download a client than to stream it for a short while. And publishers would never allow rentals otherwise, as it makes piracy even easier. Streaming destroys piracy, and used sales, hence the attraction. Hence why we'll one day be on it. Again, could be 5 years, could be 50, but it's where we're going. Just an FYI Gamefly offers PC rentals that as far as I know aren't streaming.
You're not by chance related to Pachter are you? Actually, Gamefly does not offer PC rentals.
So, you're wrong. In any case, the publishers wouldn't have any say in this. Why? Same reason that publishers have no say in Redbox. Ever read how Redbox gets most of their films? They buy them from Walmart, because publishers refuse to sell to them. Gamefly could do the same thing, because it's the physical disc, not the code.
See that difference there?

I'd go so far as to say $500/yr can easily keep you in the high-end, if you already have a good platform to work with (good case, monitor, sound card).
High-end meaning that every game is playable on max settings with a bit of AA (real AA, not the vaseline-effect shader ones). Soon when we're @ 4000x2000 resolutions I dont think AA will even matter as much really.. Definitely - it depends on how much money you spent upfront. But you could just start at 500 bucks for the whole shebang and continue spending at most $500 a year (I actually spend WAY less per year on hardware for each of my LAN's individual machines) to keep playing your games at or close to maximum graphical settings. |

It's real simple... they were up to their necks in debt... they did what they had to do to save the company, by forming another one. Most of the employees will be hired back. Exactly what I said in the other thread - they sold the assets and kept the debt. Similar to what happened when NVIDIA bought 3dfx.
It's shady, but it happens. What will make it unreasonably shady is if the original owners still have stake.
As for the employees losing their stock, again, this isn't uncommon - we've all seen the Social Network and saw that guy now in Singapore get massively diluted. It happened at the first company I ever worked at - a shady mortgage startup. We all got stock one day because the guys that founded us, were hands off, and desperately tried to sell us knew morale was insanely low. The stock didn't help. When they were sold we were told the stock had no worth. We'd already known that. When a company sells out while essentially failing those stock options become worthless. It's only very successful companies that turn the librarian into a millionaire. Worth remembering if a startup comes to you - it's a huge gamble and your offer may make you a millionaire on paper but odds are that paper will crumble away before being realized. |

I didn't have any problems playing 3D games as well. I owned one game (got it for free as being one of the beta participants) and then played a lot of the free demos. It was great.
The narrow-mindedness of people here is quite shocking to me.. you can say you don't like the idea of starting to pay for the games you play per-game, you can accuse the whole world for technology going forward, but you can't say that the technology didn't work (and one of the posters said that and immediately after said he was curious to know how DID it work.. wtf?)
Guys, google is going to put very high network connections all across the US, this thing worked with a 10Gb connection, it will work with faster connections. All that the CEO of the company said will come to pass, so get ready for it.
As for the CEO, I saw somewhere he did all of this in order to fuck his employees. I hope it is clear that isn't the case now. |

I'm sorry for the people losing their jobs, but I'm glad this platform is going to hell. Like DivX (the old DVD substitute, not the codec), it meant putting ALL the power in the hands of the publishers. And we know what happens when they have it. Sony has been crying PIRACY for years, and now that their platform has no piracy, have their prices dropped?. No siree.
This was just a stupid idea, bad for the gamers, bad for the devs. Only the publishers benefitted from it. I hope it goes bankrupt soon. |
