OnLive Layoff Rumors; Indie Weekend Giveaways

Mashable has rumors layoffs at OnLive amid a retraction of their original report that the cloud gaming service was shutting down today following a tweet by InExile's Brian Fargo to that effect (thanks nin). The story currently suggests the entire staff has been let go, though some may be rehired for the company's next phase. Mashable's official statement from OnLive on this is: "no comment on the news other than to say, the OnLive service is not shutting down." Kotaku notes that the OnLive Blog has word on a free indie game giveaway, to the extent you can own a game streamed from the cloud, saying they are offering SpaceChem and Space Pirates and Zombies (S.P.A.Z.) for free. Update: Gamasutra now says they can confirm that the entire OnLive staff was fired today.

[UPDATE 3: Martyn Williams, a correspondent for IDG News Service, reports via Twitter that he's standing outside OnLive headquarters. "In the last 20mins have seen three people walk out of # OnLive with leaving boxes. Still unclear what's happening inside pic.twitter.com/ZYFBxCyC"]

I love that they keep denying it...

Bye bye, OnLive. Let's all hope services like yours never, ever, EVER come the fuck back.

I have to agree. Can't say they'll be missed...

Between this an gaikai being sold to sony, this experiment seems to have largely failed...

There are easy workarounds to getting most games to run without Steam, its the multiplayer stuff that gets complicated. Worrying about a future where Steam goes down or decides to deny you access to your games is pointless, Steam isn't a one year idea incubated by Valve anymore. An event like that is extremely unlikely and competitors would be shitting themselves to make concessions to people estranged so that they could get their business.

I don't love digital services but streaming services like OnLive are even more dubious due to the total removal of ownership. Steam goes down I can rescue some of my library through backups or other methods. OnLive goes down and I've lost everything full stop, the only redemption method would be piracy. That's why I never want to see services like OnLive become viable until there is a method of ownership established somewhere in the process.

Steam can revoke your access to and through steam - not your access to your purchased games (unless it's a Valve game and you cheat or something). You still can play any of the games as most have keys or use your credentials. Steam has no control over your games, only over their service. Many of the games once I buy them I don't even run steam.

I thought he was too. Then I closed Steam and picked 3 games that didn't use "Steamworks" and that I had played at least one time before. All three games launched without launching Steam. Civ 5 on the other hand, which uses Steamworks I believe, did turn on Steam. Then I ran into something strange. Battlefield 2 and Crysis both activated Steam, but I don't think either use Steamworks. In other words, I couldn't find any real rhyme or reason to it. I will add that I disconnected my Internet and tried them all again. The games that launched Steam ran perfectly well in offline mode...so even though they launched Steam, they didn't need an online verification.

Not sure what any of that proves, but I found it interesting.

Interesting. Guess they ran out of capital.

They did a lot right, including all the partnerships they got (putting them on TVs was somewhat brilliant.)

Which means the failure was either:
1) Timing (too soon for the idea)
2) Idea (just not a good idea)
3) Operations (business not run by right people)

I don't see anyone else jumping into this right away, given how successful the bizdev was for these guys.

While the business might not be gone, it's late for the sky because it's targeting people who have massive pipelines but crappy computers and an aversion to consoles... who the fuck in the USA qualifies for that?

Launching in NA was a mistake, pure and simple. When it comes to bandwidth availability, we're the backwater yokels of the industrialized world. We don't improve service, we figure out new ways to bill for old service. So the 30mbit downstream or whatever was required to run the service without serious lag & compression problems limits your market to a small, already dedicated gaming group.

If the service is feasible anywhere, I'd have launched in South Korea. You know, where the government intends to have gigabit to the household as a standard service in a few years?

Launching where you don't have a large enough market with access to required infrastructure is insane.

All very good points. Couldn't agree more. They completely misjudged the market.

Well, seems they have indeed fired everyone, Gamasutra seems to have confirmed this and Gamasutra is one of the few industry sites that's pretty reliable. Link here.

Everyone saw this coming, everyone knew this would happen. Shame so many people in the industry lack so much common sense.

Besides the fact that their pricing model is ridiculous and mods/customization for your game aren't possible in OnLive's setup, I don't think there is anything necessarily wrong with Cloud gaming for certain people who maybe don't want to upgrade their gaming rigs every couple years.

If these rumors prove true then it's not like anyone saw this coming, right?

Broadband dissemination is not enough to make such services viable and that is if people want this kind of service to begin with for their gaming.

I am very, VERY skeptical over these partnerships of theirs. Yeah, they announced a ton of shit, but did you ever actually see or hear about a TV that came with it included? I think a lot of these 'partnerships' were paper tigers.

Creston

They had prototypes at E3 with systems set to ship this fall, I believe. I agree we'll have to wait and see if it happens (since this rumor is false), but there isn't much more they could have done than that.

Of course, having the TVs also ship with controllers would be huge.

And Ouya is an OnLive device as well.

This will be an interesting digital experiment. I for one hope it doesn't happen, but think about it...

What would happen if Steam was to go out of business? Did you buy the game or rent it? Yeah they've said they would unlock the DRM on the games, but talk is cheap.

Every game on steam is owned unless its F2P -- It's a digital purchase, not a digital rental.

Read the Steam service agreement. Steam can revoke your ability to play or access any game whenever they want for any reason. Steam is an Indefinite Rental service.

Even when you buy a game on a physical disc, you only purchased a license to play the game. That's all you are allowed to do with it, and they can revoke it whenever they like. It's just hard to break into folks' houses to confiscate their discs. Hurray!
