Ubisoft Uplay PC Launches

Ubisoft announces the launch of their Uplay PC application, which offers the ability to purchase their games via digital distribution along with an integrated chat system. "Uplay PC is a great way for customers to discover Ubisoft's games, connect with their friends and gaming communities, and win achievements and content that's not available anywhere else." said Stephanie Perotti, Worldwide Director for Online Games, Ubisoft. "For PC gamers that are already fans of Ubisoft's titles or have been considering trying some of our classics, this promotion is a great deal, and our way of saying thank you for their support." They are kicking things off with a sale offering 75% off on many titles, and others for just a buck:

Today at Gamescom 2012, Ubisoft officially launched Uplay PC, an application that serves as a digital distribution platform and central point for PC gamers to connect to Uplay's community and consumer-centric services. The video game developer and publisher also kicked off a promotion making select Ubisoft PC titles available through Uplay PC for as little as $1 for a limited time.

Uplay, Ubisoft's online services and distribution platform, now has more than 35 million members and is available across Ubisoft games and across platforms. Uplay PC replaces individual game launchers and lets gamers access all their Uplay-enabled PC games and Uplay services in the same place. Uplay PC also includes new features, including an integrated shop, the direct purchase and download of games, a friends list and chat system that add value to PC players' experience.

To encourage players to download and try Uplay PC, Ubisoft is making PC versions of Driver®: San Francisco, From Dust®, Silent Hunter® 5 and Tom Clancy's® H.A.W.X.® 2 available for $1 for a limited time. Other popular titles -- including Anno 2070T, Assassin's Creed® II, Assassin's Creed® Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed® Revelations, Might & Magic®: Heroes® VI, Tom Clancy's® Splinter Cell Conviction® -- are discounted up to 75%, also for a limited time.

I think Steam is as much of a pain in the ass as these other attempts at a store application. Steam were first on the block though, I've been using it since 2004. In the last few years I've built up a sizable catalog on there. EA and Ubi are way way late to the party. Steam has used up all my patience for these apps and while I tolerate and use it I'll be damned if I let another 'always on' app like this on my PC. Certainly not longer than it takes for me to get bored of a title that requires one. Once I'm done with that game the front end is uninstalled. I won't even look at purchasing something through it. It's like a banner ad on a website. My mind blocks it out and doesn't even register it's presence.

I will say that the fragmenting of games down to having to have these dedicated fucking services that always want to be on and use up resources is starting to piss me off. Steam (Yeah I'll throw that in there), GFWL, EA Origin, and now UBI. It's getting fucking insane. Especially when you have to bind the game to individual gaming profiles like GFWL and UBI.

Sick of it. Makes me not want to play computer games and go back to my board games.

EA strong arming you and only letting you get digital version from their service and this thing from Ubi (insane DRM aside) is not even on par with Stem.

On par for your needs or not, they're still challengers, and they're not strong-arming you any more than Valve is with Portal 2 and whatever else.

I would not even call these challengers.

Exactly. This isn't even close to a challenger or even competition.

Gamersgate, Direct2Drive, GreenManGaming and stores like that are the true competitors and I prefer Gamersgate and GMG over other stores personally. It's that sort of competition we need, not this kind of horrible stores with tons of caveats, even more than Steam itself.

I think id rather clean my scrotum with sulphuric acid than use this. Their shitty DRM has accounted for me purchasing precisely zero of their games since they started. Even though I love SH and settlers.
Its not the cough that carries you off but the coffin they carry you off in.

Completely agree, who would put on Uplay after having such an obvious security flaw recently?

Makes you kind of question the timing of their "finding out" about this security flaw. Lets say they knew beforehand but did not want to ruffle feathers with the already-peeved PC gaming community about their DRM, but they realized that their Storefront was coming soon down the pipeline, and revealing a security breach *after* would completely discredit such a young platform. I just don't trust Ubi enough.. they have made some pretty signature blunders, not least among them is their DRM fiascos and completely abandoning online titles regularly within a couple years of launch. $1 prices are great and everything to have bargain-shopping PC gamers jump on-board for an early boost to your new platform.. but I don't think, with their history, that I will have anything to do with this.

Yes, because I can't get enough of their always on DRM, and I just LOVE origin, so I want yet another digital distribution platform.

Driver San Francisco for a buck? Hmm. Does it have that retarded DRM of theirs?

I'd be tempted to get AC2 and brotherhood for the PC, but same issue with the DRM horseshit... Though I believe in brotherhood it's been taken out?

Last I checked the always online games like Driver and AC2 are now just online to boot, offline afterward. They might have toned it down further in the interim though, I haven't played them in a while.

Brotherhood was a simple one-time activation.

Thanks man.

Countdown until Anti DRM Fanatics spam this news story....5....4....3...2....1...

How about just people who don't want another fucking digital platform?

You don't want more deals? Spending less money? Forcing Steam to stay competitive? Just add the game to your Steam game list once it's installed.
We don't need another corp whore trying to take a piece of the pie. Does any of us need that? Any of you guys need that? How about you guys over there--did any of you guys ask for this? No?

Okay then, Nope.

You don't want driver for 1$, suit yourself.

With that sort of DRM, Ubisoft would have to pay me if they wanted me to touch one of their DRMrrific games.

Don't know about him but, for me, I wouldn't even want the game + DRM for free. There are only so many hours in the day.

42. HAWX 2 for $1 Aug 16, 2012, 21:07 hb3d

If you want to buy HAWX 2 digital deluxe edition for $1 (today only), you can do so at this URL without installing the Uplay app. You still need to install Uplay to download the game though.

So Ubisoft DRM is coming to my PC in a more convenient form? No. Thanks. After the security fiasco, Ubisoft software will never reside on my PC. It's bad enough I have to log in to be allowed to play my single player games.

Yeah you'd have to be a fucking moron to install this spyware on your machine given how crazy Ubisoft has been with DRM and their general attitude towards PC gamers. Two weeks ago they had a remote executable security flaw. I'd rather pay more money to get their game somewhere else or better yet, just buy games from companies who have a good attitude towards their customers.

Can we get some grammar nazis in here please?

I'm sorry to ask but how the hell is Uplay pronounced? I know how they want us to pronounce it "You Play", but every fibre of my being tells my they've spelt it "UpLay".

Then again it's ubisoft so I guess I should accept their twats French.

ok then, ITS SPELLED "THEY'RE" YOU PITIFUL SCUM! AND WE SHALL CLEANSE YOU FROM THIS EARTH!!

I logged in once, after that I switched Uplay to "offline" and the game launches without requiring the internet. For whatever reason they dropped it post launch. It's pretty decent for an openworld driving game. If you liked the bouncy bouncy suspension of the original Driver games then you'll like this.

Tried it. Regretted it immediately. No installation folder options whatsoever, and an immediate sense that they are making every mistake EA made with Origin and several others for good measure.
