Divinity Prototypes Missing; Reward Offered

Larian Studios sends word that a pair of PCs went missing during their gamescom participation, and these machines contained early builds of Divinity: Dragon Commander and Divinity: Original Sin, their two upcoming Divinity games. They say they have other copies of the source code, but are unhappy at the theft of their machines and are looking to inspire their return. Word is: "Larian is offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the identification of the culprit and return of the PCs. We're asking the game community to band together to track these criminals down and to get the games back!"

There are plenty of places between the office and the convention floor where it can get ripped off. Nothing conspiratorial about it, it happens often.

Yeah. It might happen often. To epic dumbfucks, that is. In the age of e.g. BitLocker encryption it is as easy as removing the USB stick with the encryption key (the TPM) to render a PC completely unusable unless you are in possession of the USB stick where the key is stored.
It is an inexpensive and very secure method of protecting your PC from unauthorized access.
If Larian Studios has not taken even the most basic and simple precautions then I have zero sympathy for any negative consequences this theft might have. You'd have to be insanely stupid to "protect" demo PCs with only a Windows or BIOS password.
If they have encrypted shit properly, however, then there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

With arcade shooter thing I mean jetpacks strapped on dragons, how is that not arcade shooter? I don't much like joke-fantasy unless it's extremely well done, and jetpacks strapped on dragons ain't it.

Did they have laser beams strapped to their heads? If there was a game with dragons that had jetpacks AND laser beams, I'd buy it instantly.

Good lord, I should hope so. Can you imagine bringing your one and only copy of the source code to your game to a convention?

If they did they would seriously be the best stupid programmers in history. Unimaginable.

you brought your SOURCE CODE to a convention? You just won the idiot of the universe award. And great, now every hacker thief in the world will be at conventions stealing systems hoping to get source code that has become common place..

I call bullshit on this though... i smell a rat, a coverup.

If you ever worked trade shows - which I used to as a sales engineer - you know there are points when your stuff is simply out of your hands. There are plenty of places between the office and the convention floor where it can get ripped off. Nothing conspiratorial about it, it happens often.

James Woods: Oh that's fun. That sounds like you had a fun time. Where would I fit in with the fun time, huh? Where does James Woods fit into the fun?

It does not say the source code was stolen, but early builds. To mention they still have the source code elsewhere is to ensure that development of the game is not in danger. They just want their stuff back ASAP to prevent the game from leaking. Though it probably already has...

Hopefully the hackers will change their shitty code to properly unlock the frames and fix the animation...

Well there's no accounting for taste. I couldn't care less about such details if I can make a seamless transition between traditional RTS gameplay and solid third-person action during battle. No game has done that yet. The Total War-style empire management is icing on the cake.

Well then put your hopes down 2 notches, Dragon Commander is some weird arcade shooter thing. And Original Sin is a hardcore isometric RPG (well, that is pretty cool) but I hoped they would do Ego Dragonis 3 with a better RPG system ;/ I loved flying around as dragon

The part where you fly around as a dragon in a third-person shooter fashion alongside your friendly forces is only a fraction of that game. It is actually a hybrid RPG/RTS where you command an army and manage the politics of a huge kingdom. So long as they can balance all of that stuff in a way that works, could be one of the most ambitious and interesting projects in development right now... I suggest you read up on it before making snap judgments.
Both games sound awesome now. Was only looking forward to the latter listed in the article until now, interesting.
