C&C Generals 2 Becoming F2P Command & Conquer

EA announces Command & Conquer, a new free-to-play online strategy game (which they are calling a "destination"), saying this will now include the BioWare-developed project originally announced as Command & Conquer Generals 2. This is to launch next year, and they are currently signing up beta testers on this site, where they have more details, and this new trailer. Here's word:

An all-out war rages in Command & Conquer, as players take control of multiple factions, compete for resources, build up operation bases and lead massive batteries of tanks, soldiers and aircrafts into battle. With incredibly detailed units, fully destructible environments, dynamic physics and exhilarating visual effects, Command & Conquer is poised to re-define what gamers expect from a strategy game. Heralding feedback driven design, Command & Conquer will evolve and develop with an expanding array of new content based on community response.

Heh, misunderstanding ftw

Well at least I am strange when it comes to voice chat no matter how I look at it. I think I got kinda spoiled by the counter strike clan times... there I also had this problem you describe, but once I left the clan nonsense behind me I find that I very very rarely want to talk or hear anyone talk in a online game or otherwise. I even hate telephones nowadays. If it were possible, I'd go for telepathy or.. text based communication.. heh.

Thankfully, my job allows for this

I'm not that way face-to-face but something about games and the internet make me uncomfortable with being social. Same here, MIC and Voice is the first thing I disable whenever I play anywhere. I don't like to talk to strangers on the web, for strange reasons... and especially not when gaming.. reminds me too much of working ...

Oh you misunderstood. I love talking to strangers... It's my friends hanging out on voice chat all day that I don't like to talk to. Well it's not that I don't like to talk to them, I just don't want to do it for hours on end virtually inches from their face. I don't know how they do it but apparently they don't mind hearing each other breathe and eat all day. Admittedly it's easier to do with closer friends but I find it very awkward with clan member and gaming acquaintances. But voice chat in game is essential... I mean how else am I going to explain to you why I died?

I feel much the same way. I just don't like to compete with other people, I prefer working together. I do play a few competitive games with my bro and nephew like Worms and Hero Academy, but I don't really play them to win, but to hang out with family who live far away.

Mostly I view playing games as puzzle solving, and playing against the AI is a puzzle to solve: how to best use my forces to defeat the AI on this map, terrain, position, faction, etc. Other reasons I play mostly SP is to experience a narrative, so I like games such as Skyrim and Deus Ex too. And lastly I play games to relax and playing competitively with winning as my goal is stressful for me, not fun.

Same for me. I rarely play any game online against other people, the Battlefield series is probably the only exception. Even then I'm usually a loner. I bought Starcraft 2 for the campaign and co-op compstomps and that's it. I've purchased every release of Sins of a Solar Empire and never once even pressed the multiplayer button. I only have one friend who even plays games online anymore and the real world keeps sapping away that time. And quite frankly my skills as a gamer are getting weaker with age, I have no desire to be continually obliterated. That might be why I like Battlefield, it may be multiplayer but because I stick to 32-64 player servers the chaos helps filter out getting your ass handed to you by one guy.

It's not 'missing out' if I don't like the feature to begin with. To be clear it's not just Generals - I get no enjoyment out of multiplayer games in general; I'm a singleplayer gamer exclusively except for the odd Left 4 Dead or Payday the Heist coop game.

Just curious, but why do you not enjoy multiplayer. I like single player games too, but still... most of the best moments I have had in gaming have been multiplayer or at least co-op.

That's a good question - one I'm sure you'll be sorry you asked once you read my answer!

I'm not a competitive person by nature, and in fact will totally psych myself out to the point that I offer no challenge whatsoever to the competition, even if I may otherwise be a better player. Reflexes are another thing - whether it be a FPS or a RTS, I think and react too slowly to ever win anything. Even in Turn-based games, where reaction time is not an issue, I can't compete. Furthermore, I feel multiplayer removes the fun factor of the game; it's no longer about having fun but about "winning". For me, it's all about the journey. Then there's the lack of a cohesion between matches - I like the immersion into the game universe that singleplayer campaign provides and multiplayer completely misses altogether.

I could go on, but that ought to be enough.

Did EA not have faith that they could sell this at a $50 price range?

Well CnC 4 was an unmitigated disaster, so I'm thinking maybe they don't.

I think you're just not playing with the right people Prez. I play with a bunch of RL friends and some ex-WoW players, we all have a great time despite none of us being pro-gamer material and any competitiveness is just taken lightly. You should think about joining SA sometime and looking into one of their MP communities, they are a total bunch of goofs and don't care about game/rank progression or etc.

Prez

I fully understand where you are coming from with the multiplayer comment, and to be hones I feel the same way sometimes, but still MP is a lot more fun then SP for me because of it's dynamic nature. You never know what you get into. I know the slaughter is not fun when you get no chance to shoot anyone in a MP game or whatever but that is not always the case, especially not with less popular games.
The coop MP is another awesome MP mode that you can enjoy without worrying about your "skills" in MP. That is where the "horde mode" shines in games like Mass Effect or the new addition to Team Fortress.

With that said some days I rather just play some SP instead of getting schooled by some 12 years old that sits home all day plays CoD.

Just don't take it too serious, sit back and enjoy it and if you don't just quit and find another server. Hope to hook up with you for some coop sometime.

Not sorry at all, it was an interesting answer. I was seriously curious. I have ladder nerve issues in SC2, for example, so I can kind of relate. I guess I am just a semi-competitive person at the end of the day. I never take it too seriously, but I like to compete for fun, so that has a factor for me. That said, I can relate to never getting super competitive people. For me it is just something to go after that gives you drive for the game.

It has never been some highlander 'there can only be one' sort of deal I mean I have lost games that I had a ton of fun in just because they were good games.

Wonder how this will work. Forcing players to buy/unlock units/structures/abilities will totally unbalance the game. Also, the lack of SP is disappointing, as that was the main draw for me in the previous games.

Did EA not have faith that they could sell this at a $50 price range? C&C is an established series with an established fanbase. If it was given the time it needs, I could see it selling at least 1 million easy. The series started losing steam when EA decided to pump one out on a yearly basis.

I used to be a moderate fan of RTS games but I'd never play them online. Had to skip SC2 because of the online requirements (though I hear you can play SP offline these days) and now C&C won't even have SP... Boo.

I do, I do! In fact, I have never played a single multiplayer game of any CnC game, starting with Tiberian Dawn, and I own every single one. I played Generals in skirmish against the AI for dozens of hours but never even remotely desired to play multiplayer.

Your missing out on the best feature of the game. Generals MP blows SP out of the water.

If MP is anything like Starcraft mp where people rush constantly 5 mins in, no thanks.

My friends and I used to do hard comp stomps in Generals/Zero Hour all on one team. It totally blows that EA again decided to make a bone headed decision with this franchise.

While I'm a fan of Vavle, I see that their new Mann Vs Machine update has a level of $ for a token to use to play for stuff.

Wait to see how it's done.

Also, this C&C game is behind the time, Relic with Company of Heroes online try this model and have return to making a full CoH 2.
