Valve and Half-Life have never made any sense. It's never lost popularity, they've obviously got more story to tell, they've got the talent and the money... so where is it? Even moving onto the episodic model and championing that as the future of game development just sort of dribbled away into nothing.
I doubt we'll see any more of Gordon Freeman at this point, no matter how desperately people hang on any fragment of news about Half-Life 3. |

Valve has spent so much time screwing around with other IPS that they totally left HL 2 in the dark and pretty well managed to piss off most of their hard core fans. Literally!
And by the time they do get around to releasing the game, there will be so much hype and expectation that it will probably be a Hugh let down. Kind of like HL2 has been and its try to figure out what the hell has happened in this story since Freeman original disappeared and everything has gone to shit.
I find it funny that this post was edited and came out like this. |

I suspect that Half-Life 3 is actually being shown behind the scenes, not to promote HL3 itself, but to shop around the Source 2 engine that's been speculated to exist. So they'll have private meeting rooms to showcase the engine with the only game they currently are developing on it, HL3, in the hopes they'll get some licensees for Source 2.
That being said however, I'm sure there's barely anything done in the game itself, just enough to showcase the tech. |

Especially since the employees basically work on whatever project catches their interest that day?
Answer: they probably didn't.
Why would they? Because working on something big and important is more fun than working on something less so? Yes, you burn out if it's all you do, and you like less high profile projects to take bigger risks on, but ultimately spectacle is a ton of fun. No one wants to do something that's just ok, people want to do something that's awesome and blows everyone's brains. Really? Tell that to Activision, they're completely content doing nothing awesome year after year after year... Tell that to the billion people who purchased (and made, actually, about a billion people in the credits) MW3 and D3, the loudest segment of which think they're absolutely badass. |

That burn out from doing just a couple big games is what scared gabe into changing his entire companies work philosophy, first into episodic, then into games as a service. Its basically something his obsession (his word not mine) with his employee health has driving him into avoiding at all costs. |
