TF2 Mann vs. Machine Update Wednesday

Valve announces the rumored update for Team Fortress 2 will indeed be the Mann vs. Machine expansion, and as surmised, will add a co-op mode to the free-to-play game when it goes live on Wednesday:

Valve, creators of bestselling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), announced today a new co-operative game for its free-to-play online action title Team Fortress 2 (TF2).

Available August 15th, 2012, Mann vs. Machine (MvM) lets you and five friends fight a lethal horde of robots on all-new maps, with the opportunity to upgrade abilities and weapons along the way. Band together to survive all of the robot waves in a variety of missions to earn incredible loot and unlock new achievements.

Leading up to its August 15th release, Valve will be making daily updates to its TF2 website, unveiling MvM content and key features. To find out more about MvM, go to http://www.teamfortress.com/mvm.

TF2 is Free to Play for PC & Mac players via Steam. For more information on TF2, please visit http://www.teamfortress.com/.

They began assisting Gooseman in beta 4 and bought the mod in 2000 around its first birthday. That's 12 fucking years ago and the game has constantly been updated by Valve ever since. Like somebody already pointed out, Valve's claim is more about the IP/franchise/current game known as CS not the 6/1999 -> 4/2000 period.

Disagree, was better before Valve.
That's pure nostalgia talking.

I believe that they mean the franchise of Counter Strike, as in turning it into a commercel (for sale) product.

Much like Portal and Team Fortress.

Have I been living in an alternate time stream? I could swear Counter-Strike was developed by Gooseman and co before being adopted by Valve later on?

Or does that count as being the creator?
Of course it counts. But if we are being truly fair, we need to recognize that it was built on a Valve platform, which gives them significant measures of contribution, and frankly wasn't perfected until Valve took over its development.

Disagree, was better before Valve.
That said, when you buy the company that invented it and incorporate the people that invented it you invented it.

Noooo. That's like saying, "EA created Ultima, Wing Commander, and Command & Conquer. nVidia created the voodoo2. Google created Youtube."

It depends. For one, they're saying "creators of," and the creators of are indeed involved. Gooseman no longer is, but Jess Cliffe is. He's a creator of. And he's bringing you anything Valve is bringing you.

And CS wasn't some company, it was two guys. Valve bought those two guys. Those two guys became Valve.

For the life of me I don't understand peoples fascination with Horde mode. The AI is always bad and the mechanics are mind numbing in their simplicity.
Sometimes I come home from work and want something that is as far as possible the opposite of a hard day's work: mindless, non-frustrating, easy gratification.

That said, I'm struggling to recall a good horde game other than L4D segments.

There used to be an Unreal Tournament mode/mod like this. Can't remember if it was UT or UT2K4 though. Was a lot of fun back then though.

being that the original mod creators are part of Valve, I don't see how this is an invalid statement?
Not all.
Minh Le left valve more than 10 years ago and created a competitor to cs.

4fort for the original TF was great with the 4 teams and a lava pit in the center if i recall.

Spazball was always great for some four team chaos.

This looks like a lot of fun, finding different ways to flex your honed TF2 skills with friends should have universal appeal to fans, even if it is easily dismissed as "Horde Mode OMGLOLWTF" by your common ignoramus who would condemn free content for a great game before even trying it.

Hmmm..I have a feeling this will be a variation of MOBA..
Everybody is fired and they get paid by killing robots..?
And why is Mann-father talks about infestations and munitions?
