The Jace Hall Show Website has the shocking news that Paul Steed is dead, though the circumstances behind him passing at such a young age are not clear. Paul was probably best known for his work at id Software as a modeler on the Quake series, but among other things, he also worked on Wing Commander in his days at Origin. Personally I will say that Paul and I were friends, in that internet/work-related sort of way. As is often the case it did not start out like that: Our shared lack of tolerance for bullshit caused clashes before giving way to mutual respect, but after that we had some good laughs back in the day. I'll have to suffer some regrets of us not managing to get together for a Scotch and a cigar as we had been discussing on and off for a while now. I guess there's a lesson in there.

And he would have really liked that I cursed in remembering him.

R.I.P. Paul.

I vaguely remember him mouthing off about Unreal & how horrible it was compared to Quake 2, pretty sure he backed down on that. His plan updates were epic & by way of showing Epic his views had changed he included a picture of his office at id with a box copy of Unreal with all his other games. He seemed to stay a little obsessed with hinged animation from what I remember, when it was all going skeletal.

Pretty surprising - I give my best to his family, real life and online. I wasn't aware he worked on much outside of Wing Commander or Quake series. pretty impressive.

There will probably be an Obituary either tomorrow or Monday for sure, if people really want to know. Assuming he died within the last day anyway. Though those are often annoyingly vague, so who knows.

I'd be courious of his age and the circumstances, neither of which seem to be online. The news certainly surprised me, and pictures confirm he wasn't that old.
