The Jace Hall Show Website has the shocking news that Paul Steed is dead, though the circumstances behind him passing at such a young age are not clear. Paul was probably best known for his work at id Software as a modeler on the Quake series, but among other things, he also worked on Wing Commander in his days at Origin. Personally I will say that Paul and I were friends, in that internet/work-related sort of way. As is often the case it did not start out like that: Our shared lack of tolerance for bullshit caused clashes before giving way to mutual respect, but after that we had some good laughs back in the day. I'll have to suffer some regrets of us not managing to get together for a Scotch and a cigar as we had been discussing on and off for a while now. I guess there's a lesson in there.

And he would have really liked that I cursed in remembering him.

R.I.P. Paul.

God Bless Paul, I guess he & I really aren't going to have that LAN Bash in Quake after all. He was a real great guy who made you feel like a million bucks when you approached him with humble questions. He took the time out to explain things to you provided you listened. God Bless you Paul! Jay K.

If I recall correctly, there was a point where he asked for some feedback on the Quake 2 weapon models he had created. I exchanged some emails with him about them, mostly criticizing the rocket launcher. He was very cool in the way he dealt with my feedback, even if I wasn't always as politically correct as I probably should have been. Heck, I was still young back then. He took the time to describe what he was going for with his designs. He basically went out of his way to describe why things looked the way they did. There was always logic behind his decisions. And he was definitely a master at his craft. The best compliment I can give him was the first time I saw the female model from Quake 2 with the ponytail. It was the first time the thought of ever "F'ing" a polygon ever crossed my mind. Steed!

Easily the loudest most outspoken individuals in my mind are the ones that contribute to crafting and eroding smoother society or pipelines for various fields, they just happen to openly think out loud a bad idea from time to time and become easy fodder (crackwhore model, well bad idea is debatable).
