The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Mass murder every day of the week....oh, wait, it didn't happen. BUT IT COULD HAVE!
Give me a break. I love hunting and have been doing it most my life but people shouldn't carry concealed weapons of any kind in public places without incredibly stringent requirements on training and mental faculty for decision making. It has nothing to do with gun control debates or how people feel about vigilantism, it's just about human nature. Most people do not make good decisions under stress and stressful situations become dangerous when people have weapons. Conceal carry permits go partway to addressing this but fail to take into account situations where someone with adequate training could still be influenced by outside factors. It also makes things a lot more difficult for law enforcement.
People having weapons will rarely prevents situations like this, it is the price of having a society. There will always be social outliers, people with mental problems and sociopaths who will find a way to hurt others. That is why we have law enforcement, mental health care and a justice system. It doesn't always work right but for the most part we all muddle through. To be clear: I do not think that a concealed weapon would prevent situations like the Aurora, CO theater. By the time you grab cover, assess the situation, and draw your weapon, people are already dead and dying. I wouldn't even begin to guess how I would react from there. I'm not going to armchair quarterback that situation. The NRA can make all the cutesy posters they like, but nobody can prevent situations like that.
As far as conceal carrying? The simple fact is that we give high school kids automatic weapons and billions of dollars worth of hardware to kill people. We give police the barest of psych tests and hand them a ridiculous amount of power. But some people expect that, for some reason, we should hold civilians to a higher standard.
I've seen police officers freak out more under stress than civilians. I've trained with officers and witnessed it first hand.
And until we have 1 police officer for every civilian, following you around 24/7, they are never going to be there the instant you need them.
Also, to be clear, I am not cop bashing. I was in the process of joining the academy when I decided it wasn't for me, but I have LEO friends and acquaintances. They have a tough, shitty job to do, and I respect that. |
