Steam Adding Non-Gaming Titles

Valve announces plans to add non-gaming applications to Steam saying they are set to launch their first set of "software" (what does that make games?) titles to the service on September 5th:

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.

"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."

Why doesn't anyone point out the draconian update measures Steam forces on it's consumers.

I had sworn off the platform however the discounts were unavoidable.

Why can't they leave all versions open and have a opt in process for which version to play. The underground sharing of exe's in the forums?

The amount of bitching over this service is mind numbing.

Ugh Steam is DRM, lol. And when your first issue arises with them and they ban your entire account of 400 titles, don't come here crying.
Or if your computer gets hacked and they run a cheat and you get banned.. Don't come here crying, or when your 9 year old decides he wants to install a aim bot... And Steam locks your entire account. Dont come here crying. Or when Steam, decides on issueing new terms that you can't agree too... Please note, you can't even uninstall the software without accepting the terms.
I'm well aware that Steam includes a form of DRM. As for the rest of your statement, I've been using Steam for over 7yrs and none of that stuff has ever happened to me or anyone I know. There's definitely room for improvement but your whining doesn't match reality.

Other than the 75% off summer/winter sales I see no reason for it.

Well, easy is subjective, but I'm still using the old desktop environment on 8. There's several tutorials out there telling you how to do it.

Just so you are aware... the RTM version kills some of those workarounds, just like the consumer preview killed the ones from the developer's build.

You pretty much will have to replace the explorer shell.

Lots are fantasizing about adobe and MS stuff on it with big sales. Its NOT going to happen. Neither of those companies (especially MS) is going to be willing to give any control to steam, and if pigs flew and they did put it on there, it would never have a good sale for titles from those companies.

This is going to have the kinda crap thats on giveAwayOfTheDay website, those $20 apps, most of which are crap.

If we are lucky, we'd get something like FRAPS on sale, which I'd buy, since they charge so much for that and almost never have a sale.

What I want is for that stuff to be completely separate, I want steam for games. I don't want it intruding on my steam home page unless I tell it to. I don't want the stuff showing up in game searches, etc.

Adobe will probably cease box sales seeing as their new path is a subscription service and via cloud servers, so it was only for the comedy value that I said "Photoshop"

Fortunately for you they don't do that for cheats and aimbots. Just banned from VAC servers.

I wonder if valve up'd their time table on releasing this because of Windows 8? It's no secret that Gabe feels threatened by it given his past comments.
Yeah, I don't think it's a coincidence. But Valve could have done this years ago. And it's the same with media - I'd much rather buy all my media (DRM free) through a centralised service like Steam where I can redownload it whenever I please. Especially with Steam style sales. I rarely buy TV shows, movies or music but would very much more likely to if they were available through Steam, DRM-free, redownloadable and offered at a sensible price.

I also think it's a mistake that Valve hasn't done enough for touchscreen devices, particularly the casual market. Although I'm not much into that myself by not getting there more quickly Microsoft will be able to dominate the market without any competition.

I will say this, I eagerly await the cross-over promotions for this...what kinda hats will TF2 achieve from getting Photoshop?

You put on a hat, and it randomly picks a player on the other team, kicks off FlashPlayerPlugin_11_3_300_268.exe on their system, and pegs 100% of their proc time.

The "Still a ripoff even at a 90% discount" hat. It looks like an empty bank account.

Actually I take that back, I probably would buy a legitimate copy of Photoshop for $65.

It's really no less a piece of crap than, say, Win7. What is a problem is Metro, but alas, that's easily fixed.

Easily fixed? I thought metro could not be disabled?

Now see, this starts to make sense as to why Gabe went all up in arms over the inclusion of the 'walled garden' issue with Win8...he wants his own version.

Or it could be the fact that Win 8 is a piece of crap...but I'm sure your theory holds ground too.

It's really no less a piece of crap than, say, Win7. What is a problem is Metro, but alas, that's easily fixed.

As I see it, Gabe's whole rant on Win8 had to do solely with the 'walled garden' issue he had with the store Microsoft intended on adding, and thanks to this announcement, it makes plenty of sense why he's upset, it's direct competition.
