Standalone DayZ Coming

This blog post announces plans for a standalone version of the DayZ zombie modification for Arma II, something that was first mentioned just a month ago. Here's word:

Thatís right, this is actually happening - DayZ will be developed as a standalone game, with me as project lead, by Bohemia Interactive. This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago.

Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.

I realize people will have many, many questions - but we wanted to let everyone know the announcement now. Over the coming weeks, these questions will be answered. The game will have itís own site, www.dayzgame.com and the mod will continue at itís present link.

ďNow this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.Ē - Winston Churchill

Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, and DotA all spawned sequels which were full-fledged games. The initial mods themselves were developed to completion and fully satisfying.

Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.

Sounds to be like this won't affect those of us with ARMAII at all. The standalone is sounding like an option for people who don't want to waste money on shitty-ass ARMAII just to play DayZ.

Now that the mod has graduated, maybe they can make it a consistent experience. Cuz right now, it's a pain in the ass to run: Maybe it connects, maybe it doesn't, maybe it'll run at 7 fps, maybe it'll run at 30, etc.

This is great news. DayZ is one of the most refreshing games to come along in a long time. It's also one of my favorite mods since Pirates Vikings and Knights II(which is long dead). Glad to see a full game is being made out of this. Things can only go up from here.

PS. How is this milking or anything? Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, Dota all started off as mods made into full fledged games. Can someone explain the logic of how this is any different?

Oh, so very sorry you feel "ripped off" for buying a game you have no interest in, just so that you could participate in the ALPHA TEST for a mod somebody happened to make for it... That's your fault, not Bohemia's or Rocket's. He very easily could have kept it private until it was ready to be sold on its own and made zillions of dollars for himself, but instead he did a very generous thing for both fans of the series and his employer. But all of us Johnny-come-latelys don't give a shit about that, do we?

Yeah, I paid for Operation Arrowhead recently (already had ARMA 2 from some sale a while back) purely so I could try out DayZ, but I knew what I was doing. Even if I didn't already know he had plans to take it standalone, I wouldn't be bitching about them milking it or exploiting current players, etc. Good god, the false sense of entitlement some people have is just mind-blowing. It sickened me to see how many people there were during the Summer Sale whining about the discount not being big enough... Have some sense, grow the hell up, and make better purchasing decisions for yourself.

SSDs are pretty cheap nowadays. I've seen them approaching 50 cents per GB (a sale on a 128 for $60). 128gb is enough for OS, probably a good chunk of apps, and a few games.

It'll be interesting to see this game in a polished state and whether or not the current bugs are associated with being in alpha or from the Real Virtuality 3 engine.

I've given the mod all I can but I can only tolerate the 'quirks' of this game for so long...
It's based on a Bohemia engine. They're great for keeping on updating forever, but then they always need to. Sure it'll get better, but I doubt it'll ever get close to a state comparable to "polished".

Bohemia games are always ridiculously ambitious and it's a case of whether you're willing to tolerate the inevitable bugginess for that. I'm not sure whether Bohemia coders are themselves bad, but the main reason why their games are so buggy is that their game design is much more ambitious than most games, so there's inherently more scope for bugs.

the problem with this game is the engine. It is horrible in every aspect. Standalone and it will be considered but if it is anywhere close to the current engine I have other games to fill my time.

I feel the same way; I really tried to like this game. Have tried several times to play it Coop with friends but in the end, the game mechanics just plain suck. It was always a task to try and do anything. I canít see this being any better now that itís going to have a dedicated team and its own standalone process. In the end itís still going to be terrible. Good in concept but bad in presentation. I just canít see myself wasting money on this.

The numbers Dayz is putting up is enough to get the attention of a halfway competent developer or MOD author. The best version of the game will not be in ARMA2. Thank God.

It's likely the mod development will continue as an open beta. Then at some point BI will wrap it all up with only the needed objects and terrains required by DayZ and release it as a standalone. My guess is by the time it's released standalone the fad will be over. They are very open though and it's doubtful the standalone version will be developed in a closed nature as a cash in. They have to be open. They don't have a real Q&A department and unlike most FPS that aren't indie and owned by large publishers, the devs actually require the community. For better or worst (quirky engine) this is how you get decent interesting PC games. Better than Crytek's\Epic\ID's closed "PC customers are the devil" system even if the overall quality of their products is held to a higher standard (for those goofy console players who only care about the superficial). Of course if BI could develop for consoles as an indie, they surely would But for now they need PC gamers.

I think the load times are ArmA2 issues not the mod. I believe load times will be much improved if you have the game on an SSD.

Why stop there? Why not go balls out and load it from a RAID 0 array of SSDs?

Nahh I keep my porn collection on the Raid0 SSDs

I'm kinda interested but my experience with the ArmaA engine wasn't a pleasant one so I'd like to see a whole new engine/product. I doubt that will happen though, it will likely just be a different dev build with some dedicated staff.

I love DayZ but if thi follows the standard trend of most Bohemia projects, it will come out basically unplayable and require months of beta patches just to get it to a decent state. I hope I'm wrong though, they'd be stupid to squander the massive community that's formed around this game.

Will this game get a different engine? I LOVE ARMA 2 but the engine is a bit old & wonky.
