2GB RAM, 80GB HDD, and more likely than not a PSU built to power exactly the components it includes and would not be able to run that GPU.

The point was that it was an entry gaming system. Just like a console, where you buy extra controllers and such, eventually you would need to beef up the weaknesses of the PC listed. 4GB of ram is pretty cheap, and so is a bigger hard drive.

As for the PSU, there's probably plenty of room for that GPU. We have budget GPUs in similar Optiplex models at work, driving 2 to 3 monitors. The cards were added in later... not bought with the systems.

Heck... even a beefier base $400 - $500 system would be better than a console, IMO... but I was trying to keep it near average console cost. One really doesn't need a $2000 system anymore to decently play games on a PC.

Some Windows 8 exclusive games coming? (DirectX12)

There's only one Windows 8 exclusive announced thus far and it's Skulls of the Shogun. However, the exclusivity has nothing to do with DX12 or any other technical reason. It's just MS being MS and throwing arbitrary exclusivity onto whatever they can in a feeble attempt to hurt the competition and promote whatever their latest product is. They did the same thing with Halo 2 and Shadowrun (Vista exclusivity even though neither game used DX10 and both ran fine and dandy on XP with some hackery). I wouldn't be surprised to see a Windows 8-exclusive PC port of Halo 3 or Gears of War 2.

This news reminded me of Windows CE on the Dreamcast.
Found this tidbit on Wikipedia:
"The operating system used by some Dreamcast titles was developed by Microsoft after two years of work with Sega. It was an optimized version of Windows CE supporting DirectX. According to Richard Doherty, president of Envisioneering Group, "Microsoft had initially wanted Windows CE to be Dreamcast's main operating system. It isn't."

Yup, because Intel integrated graphics will run anything.

$305.00 + shipping.

Not the fastest thing in the world, but good enough for a budget machine, and would play most games at medium settings. Probably would need to get a bigger hard drive later on.

Further proof that Win8 is trying to be the Xbox Live for all platforms with all the locking and restrictions that come with it?

No. Why would it be proof of locking/restrictions?

Yes, I'm sure it's going to apply for some games, I mean, GFWL has locking and restrictions. But PC gaming has always been about options, right? Some publishers go for the locking and restrictions. Some do not. Some offer through one store. Some offer through many. Some offer only in DRM-free methods.

Why would you ever think that's changing? Because of a common OS? Phones are getting that OS, too, do you think the PC and the phone will have much in common?

Depends on how far they take it. Windows 8 for ARM (aka WinRT) is going Windows Store only for games and applications. Windows 8 x86 may have that in its future, depending on how it goes for ARM.

Just like Apple did with MacOS... wait a minute, that's not what happened at all!

Anyone that thinks Microsoft would do this is about as idiotic as they think Microsoft needs to be to do this. Do you think Adobe would stand for this? How about antivirus companies like Norton? Or maybe companies like SAP. Do you think they'd appreciate being told that their wares are only able to be sold via a Microsoft App Store with Microsoft taking a cut?

This is what Apple, Linux and ChromeOS fans dream of happening, and no one at Microsoft is dumb enough to make it a reality, despite the conspiracy theories people see.

The Saturn didn't launch with no notice.

In the US, (if I remember right), it was supposed to launch in the fall. Only they announced it was for sale immediately during E3 (in May, according to the below) as a surprise.

edit: I remember walking into Babbages and finding them on the shelf, when they weren't supposed to be out for another 4 months...

I don't think it will be October, cause Forza Horizon and Halo 4 would be launch titles for it, instead of 360 titles.

That was sarcasm. Other than Sega (with the Saturn), I can't think of a console launching with little to no notice.

The Saturn didn't launch with no notice. Sega burned all their bridges with Sega CD and 32x, so by the time the Saturn came out people said "Fuck you, I'm not going to pay for an undersupported piece of trash". It's sad because Saturn was pretty solid, but by then everyone had jumped ship to PSX because Sony didn't have a sullied reputation and they had the big games(Toshinden, Wipeout, Namco arcade games[Ridge Racer, Ace Combat, etc], Twisted Metal, etc).

In other news, windows 8 RTM has the ability to boot to desktop disabled, and forces you to boot to metro. Yeah, I'm sure businesses are going to be ecstatic about that one.

It'll probably will. The biggest consumers of Windows, corporations big and small, have absolutely no reason to upgrade to Win8. Win7 serves perfectly for what they want, hell even WinXP does. Can't see a high adoption rate by them, nor by gamers like us.

Win8 may become a failure that only WinME managed to achieve. Who knows?

Oh, cool. Guess I'm just buying another Playstation then. Thanks for making that decision easy Microsuck.

I can't say that I have made up my mind for certain...I mean I might buy one of every console knowing me and my gaming gadget addiction...but I skipped the XBOX 360 for a number of reasons and I don't see many of them being addressed as part of the "720". Not that Sony is perfect, or Nintendo for that matter, but as far as my interests and priorities are concerned they seem to be much more interesting to me. Who knows, maybe I will skip them all, at least for the first year or so, if the launch titles are underwhelming.

They'll definitely try it on, I'd bet anything on it. They might have a tougher time though because it feels like there is more resistance to Win8 than there was with Vista before its launch. The concept of consolitis is well known and the prospect of having your actual OS designed with the multiplatform market in mind is pretty offputting.
