To be honest, the only thing it WAS good for in 2004 was the physics engine, now that was kick-ass and worlds beyond Havok (then) and PhysX (didn't exist really). Add to that a great dynamic shadow system (despite baked map shadows) and a very very nice facial animation system and extremely nice looking water and glass and it was a good engine. Especially because it blew Doom 3 and then Unreal Engine 2 out of the water (graphically and tech-wise) in all aspects.
But nowadays? Doom 4 is gonna be a joke if it's based on Tech5 and megatexture. And Source 2 better be playing in the upper class, that is, frostbite 2.0, CryEngine, Unity 4, UE3 or 4 or Dunia engine. Can't see this happening within less than 2 years. Developing a full blown AAA engine costs actual money and effort. And if valve isn't developing HL3 side-by-side they are never gonna reach release in a state of not out-of-date'ness.
I am actually kinda shocked source 2 isn't already there. Film Maker would have been a HUGE and perfect test-bed for a bleeding edge engine. How they missed that is beyond me. |

Yeah, but it was only a year removed from Max Payne 2. Max Payne 2 had physics, and I remember one physics puzzle - some pills were up high and you could get them down. Floaty and disgusting, and just one puzzle.
And, for its time, advanced. |

Yeah, the low poly worlds are starting to look bad, but that engine lasted a very long time with little up-keep due to the textures and animations.
It was a fairly spectacular engine for anyone that wanted to run well on a very wide range of PCs. That's common now, but wasn't back in 2004. Fair enough point on facial animations, I dunno I always kinda found the physics to feel really floaty and gimicky but maybe that's just me. |

Just Cause 2 NEVER shows you a loading screen once the game is going, and it's approximately 90,000 times larger than Half Life 2. The Crysis engine never has to load during a level. The Dunia engine never had to load anything once it was going.
Will you please stop grounding your engine technology in 1992, and get somewhat more modern? GTA San Andreas had a better engine than you, and that was on the playstation 2...
Creston That would require Valve not to take 10 years to finish something however. Source was imo in a way outdated the day it first arrived. Never could understand why anyone gave a shit about that engine. |

| Hoho, always figured they won't do Half-Life 3 with the outdated source engine, but do a proper new engine overhaul first. The source engine simply did not age well the cel-shading may still look ok, but you can't make a AAA game based on that, not if it's hl3 |
