Private companies have absolutely NILL reason to protect your data at their own expense. Particularly if you have not given an option to give it to them. And equally private companies see that cybersecurity costs money and doesn't earn money, so it is a clear and easy thing to "cut".

fun fact, google chrome spell check doesn't know the word cybersecurity nor spellcheck (the verb!) nor NILL, like seriously, how can it not know nill ? Even if it didn't know the modern use of the word, nill is a perfectly good word!

I'm still not seeing why we need a federal law to prevent cyberspace attacks. Let private companies handle their own security; it's in their own best interest to do so after all. Meanwhile, there's no reason that I can see that the entities which oversee Federal national security critical networks need to wait on Congress to tell them to do what they should already be doing. I highly, HIGHLY doubt that a bunch of out of touch rich lawyers that make up the Congress know anything about how to properly secure a network anyway.
