In the past week we've had someone here ask that George Lucas, John Romero and John Carmack die and/or be killed.
Yay anonymous internet. |

John Carmack is *not* the father of the first person shooter. WHAT? That um, kind of like, just proves my point... |

John Carmack is *not* the father of the first person shooter. Whatever to that. What he did was actually make people care and changed the history of gaming. The other games mentioned are "Who?, What?".
I'd say Ultima Underworld is also worth mentioning. |

At around the 12 minute mark and beyond he's pretty clear about the non-future of Rage. No Rage 2. I'm sure the 3 defenders of the game are bawling their eyes out before trying to piece together another excuse. Did it show any DOOM 4 scenes? I can't watch that long. You missed the point of keynote talks. They talk. And talk. And talk some more. The rest of QuakeCon is for showing off stuff. John Carmack said they aren't ready to show Doom 4 yet. Meh. You can still show stuff during the keynote talks! |

The image has to be warped and the game needs to respond to the head tracking data. |

How about SLI support? 3D? etc. Every few years we get some cool new code or device that's supposed to change everything and it ends up falling by the wayside much sooner than later or never realized at all.

Right and tech is now way better and there are always leasons learned. Just having a much larger field of view with or without glasses huge. We also have bendable LCD on it's way. So wrap around monitors are coming. If this doesn't work that might, that will only be screen and nothing else, which is where I think this should start. Too much awkward at once means too much.
I'm not one for needing the total VR experience. Head-tracking, standing, legs and arms being recorded... that is where those VR stations failed for me. Trying to do way too much too early on. Just full vision of the screen. Otherwise it gets Kineticky for me.

zombiefan wrote on Aug 3, 2012, 23:28: The problem with VR setups like this is until you get some sort of unidirectional walking surface under your feet, the level of "reality" you feel will still be diminished. I know because I went through this when I bought my VFX-1 helmet
So ultimately this will still be a gimmick. A pretty gimmick, but a gimmick nonetheless. I'm not against feet tactals, but I'm more than happy if I can't see around the screen, aka totally saturated with screen. That alone will suck me in. I will be happy with standard k/m movement from there. I'm not even needing or at best only wanting head tracking as a check option in a game.
The tools we have today are a gimmick as well. |

There's a bit of irony in JC's decision to go down this technology path. He's the same person who preached that there's no need for pricey peripherals designed to process sound and physics in games (and even indicated that he thought they are a waste of $$$).
Now he's designing an expensive peripheral device that is unnecessary and only a small percentage will likely have. It will be interesting to see what level of success this product will have, considering others like it have had minimal success. |

"Well yes, VR still has all the problems of being gimmicky and useless, but cool."
The idea of what it COULD be is cool. What we WISH it COULD be. But I think this is gonna be J Carmacks own virtual money grab. We haven`t seen any science tech news about how new HMD displays are hitting the market and how hi rez they are etc etc etc.
"With an incredibly wide field of view, high resolution display"
I await the reviews. Cause if it is ultrawide, and actually hi rez, how are they gonna keep the costs down? Gotta love that marketing. ;p
So John is gonna pass off HIS new redesigned just for DOOM IVs low rez HMD screens. And of course every DOOM Wad in the world is gonna buy into this. Cause John is Gawd afterall.
Stayed tuned for the new VR Ripoff.... round 2.
