Op Ed

Kotaku - Gaming's Biggest Problem Is That Nobody Wants To Talk.
The biggest problem in gaming today is that the gaming industry thinks we're all out to get them. They think gamers are the enemy, a group that needs to be treated with disdain and avoided whenever possible. They think the only way to fool us into buying their products is to cover everything in a shroud of secrecy, only drip-feeding us pretty trailers and juicy soundbites during carefully-tailored marketing campaigns. They think we should just sit there and lap it up.

I find that game communities can vary wildly based largely upon how active the developers are in that community. You look at various communities for those few developers who actively interact with the fans (most of them indie developers) and those games have strong and friendly communities generally. Sure you get the occasional ass or entitled idiot but by and large when a dev house actively interacts with fans, the community is stronger.

Then you look at the forums and facebook pages for companies who don't interact with the fans and players, like Blizzard. Blizzard devs more often than not treat their community like children and because of that back and forth their community is shit. The forums are full of hate, whining and trolling. This is of course the fault of the players and fans but if the developers actively gave a shit, things could turn around there.

For this reason I tend to agree with the op-ed, at least partly. Those dev houses who consider that the 'gamers are the enemy' always have the worst communities, where as those who interact in a mature way, share ideas and and generally treat their fans and players maturely and do so often, it is those communities that are the strongest and friendliest.
