Hey Carmack now that texture sizes and polycounts have hit their limit (consoles!), now that normal maps and real time shadows are passe, how about developing some imaginative physics and realtime animation systems for Doom 4 so that when I blow open a Cacodemon the sludge that pours out of the new buckshot orifice cakes the floor and causes the player model to slip hindering movement oh and along with excessive gore bring back the religious overtones and get Reznor to do a death machine 5.1 surround audio mix and don't be afraid to flood levels with horrific enemies rather than 3 or 4 that hop about and go to "cover" using pretend pretend AI and loop endlessly in A to B cycles rather concentrate on a real Doom game that takes us straight to a visceral gameplay PTS inducing hell I want to be able to blow Cyberdemons in half and hide inside their still pulsating guts using the meat as actual cover while 100s of Demons roar across a cavernous room towards my meat bunker.

So who is Fireball cinnamon whisky? Because that shit is my new water.

Weird. I always thought it was best to keep crazy flavors to vodka, which isn't supposed to have its own flavor.

Quake 4 wasn't made by id.

Then they should've called it something else. It looks worse than q3 and iD let that happen.

I don't recall asking. Tho now that I know, I'm curious wtf they are going to do with it. More d3 boogeyman crap, or a true attempt at a remake.

Doom 4 looks to be an updated version of Doom 2, that is to say it takes place on Planet Earf

What gives you that idea?

Carmack has always been about raising the bar and allowing people to create what they will with what he's done.

Make fun of the game all you like, the "code" he throws out there is second to none.

Id Studio was supposed to ship with the game, but it didn't and as far as I know still isn't available...which probably isn't as big of a problem as that not enough people were even looking for it for me to find any real news on it anywhere after some Googling.

Both of those are pretty disappointing and make it hard to agree with you at this point. Years ago, sure, but not now.

Yea I admit I'm reminiscing of the early Carmack who made my clanning days glorious. Not so much the pc bashing rocket building Carmack. Still, the guy is a coding genius in many ways, he just needs to put some passion back in his fat wallet...

Yours truly,

The code is still solid and he pushes coding to the edge. However, I have always said that ID lost their creative force when John Romero left (or was fired). If these meat bags ever lose their pride, I would love to see a reunion. This reminds me of what a lead singer in a Rock and Roll band once said. A reporter asked how is the band getting along now? The lead singer replied, "Like it or not, we have chemistry so we will have to work through our issues." Enough said...

He already had the idea in his head to leave and start a new company with Tom Hall, when he was asked to step down by Adrian, Kevin and Carmack. So he signed the resignation and said fuck you guys anyway. More or less.

Though I'm sure he tells everyone he quit to make Daikatana.

Read "Masters of Doom". It's a great book, well written, and gives you insight into the world of the id Software that once was. You know, the Innovative, Ground Breaking, Imaginitive id of the early 90's.

The fact of the matter is the two Johns are pretty much worthless without each other is what I gathered from reading the book. Carmack could design a great engine but it took Romero to bring it to life, and Romero brought the ideas to the table once Carmack decided what he wanted to do with the next engine. It worked well, and they ruined that system.

Do us a favor john and work on some other awful game like RAGE. No need to further sully the good name of Doom. But they will no doubt milk what ever IP they can. I will not be buying this game until the $5 fire sales come, been burned too many times in the last two years.

What a truly awful time in gaming history. We are definitely in the dark ages of gaming now, beginning in about 2008.
