Apogee Software kicks off QuakeCon by announcing a Rise of the Triad "rebirth," marking an unexpected first-person shooter revival from an unexpectedly still-extant publisher. Word is the game is in development at Danish developer Interceptor Entertainment using the Unreal Engine 3 and Steamworks, and it will feature a single-player campaign as well as full multiplayer support. They offer a reveal trailer (NSFW), announce the launch of the game's website (it's currently producing "403 Forbidden" errors, but that should be sorted soon), and that they will be showing the game off at QuakeCon. Here's word:
Today at QuakeCon, Apogee Software and Interceptor Entertainment announced the rebirth of the cult-classic first-person shooter, “Rise of the Triad” - vowing to make it bigger, better and more ludicrous than ever before. Powered by the industry-leading Unreal Engine 3 from Epic Games, “Rise of the Triad” includes a full single-player campaign, a fully featured multiplayer experience and so much more.
The first trailer for the upcoming title can be seen at Machinima.
“We were seeking a strong, independent, hard-working development partner to herald the eagerly-anticipated return of ‘Rise of the Triad’,” said Terry Nagy, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Apogee. “We have indeed found that partner in Interceptor Entertainment.”
"Apogee has given us a great opportunity with Rise of the Triad," said Interceptor CEO Frederik Schreiber. "We are all about fast-paced action and this was simply a perfect match for us as fans of old school shooters."
Set for release on PC via Steam late this year, “Rise of the Triad” is packed with features that are sure to melt your face off:
- Step into the shoes of the H.U.N.T. (High-Risk United Nations Taskforce) with five unique characters, each with different play styles.
- Blast through over 20 of levels of explosive single-player action.
- Unique multiplayer maps bring back all the fun and excitement of classic ROTT.
- The full arsenal of over-the top weapons is back, including the Flamewall, Firebomb, Split Missile, Drunk Missile and, of course, the Excalibat!
- The maniacal modes return, too, with God mode, Elasto mode, Mercury mode, Shrooms mode and everyone's favorite, Dog mode!
- Build your own levels, mods and share them with Valve's Steamworks.
- Offline single-player and multiplayer allows for instant action.
- Find tons of secrets, collectables, special events and hidden areas to explore.
- Get more than 100 achievements to add to your score, which is tracked on our worldwide leaderboard and stat-tracking system.
- ROTT is bloodier and more ludicrous than ever, with full character and enemy dismemberment.
- The iconic original soundtrack has been completely re-forged in the fires of heavy metal!
- Nostalgia abounds with the option to play with all the original sounds and music.
- Built on fully-licensed Unreal Engine 3 technology, ROTT will run on low-end PCs and push high-end PCs to their limits!

And so we see Miller and Broussard trying to dig themselves out of debt.
Sigh.
And don't worry about Shadow Warrior. You can bet your ass you're going to see that sucker again. That's their ace in the hole. They're going to make sure they have the right developer for that one. Maybe when Romero decides to get back in to the PC FPS market.
Let's bring back Pong, I remember how awesome that was...in the 70's.
I hear throwing rocks at each other used to be considered "gaming" back in the day. Let's do that too. |

| I enjoyed the original. However, this trailer looks terrible - even considering that it's a budget title. |

My first impresssion was that it looked like a combination of Duke Nukem 3D and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

I was a big fan of the original. I get bad vibes from the trailer tho. I'll definitely check it out. Forget Shadow Warrior, Blood is what you want! |

It looks...interesting. You can see all sorts of rough edges, but if they maintain the feel of the original, I would likely purchase this.
Meanwhile, Shadow Warrior remake? YES PLEASE!

That was shockingly ROTT. I had to do a double-take. The scripted finishing moves were a bit offensive but it sure looked like the ROTT I remember otherwise.
I'll stop at "interested" for now. |

How about HD sprites? It would confuse the hell out of kids if they saw sprites on their screen today.
I don't care.
Only people who can remember the original are going to play this anyhow. Especially after seeing that trailer.. |

Wonder if it'll survive today's hyper-sensitive PC culture. Considering Postal still rises now and again, I think Shadow Warrior would do OK.
Now that I think about it, the nonchalant racism might cause a stir. |

This is being developed by the same team behind the failed Duke Nukem Reloaded, a free fan-made Duke 3D remake granted an official license by Gearbox Software. Unfortunately, Gearbox fucked them over by not specifying whether or not their game could ever be publicly released so it was abandoned before wasting another year of development.
If you dare mention this on the Gearbox forums it will earn you a permanent ban from their lovely moderators.

SO CLOSE. I would look forward to this game more if I could be reasonably assured of being able to see it's textures before I died of old age. |
