Alan Wake was a wonderful surprise. I totally grooved to it from beginning to end. I've heard the whole "light as a weapon" thing was overused and gimmicky, and maybe to a point that's true. I've heard that it tried and mostly failed and being scary. I'm kind of a wuss, so I had some tense moments in all honesty, but I can still see that argument being made. Other complaints can be leveled at the enemy variety, weak ending sequence, and tired gamey tropes like constantly having all of your weapons taken away and the like, but all of that doesn't dull the enjoyment. The story was not only good by videogame standards; it was smart, mature, and clever by any entertainment medium standards. The visuals were good (in places downright gorgeous),certainly good enough to not be distracting by their badness (quite a feat considering the game's epic development cycle). The presentation was excellent, and I particularly like the serialized TV show presentation of the chapters. The game did a good job of being moody and oppressive without completely immersing you in pitch blackness like Doom 3, and the dialog was intelligent, adult, and uniformly excellently voiced. It is in turns creepy, funny, sad, and thoughtful, and makes the game much more than the some of its imperfect parts in my opinion.
TL:DR version: GET IT. It's a steal at 7 bucks.
They also have both alan wake games for $10
I was going to pass on them until the winter sale, but your review has me thinking I should get them now
