Blizzard on Diablo III

The Diablo III Forums have a Message from Mike Morhaime reflecting on Diablo III in the two months since the action/RPG sequel launched. He recaps and explains the game's growing pains after launch, and goes on to discuss its future, saying they are working on a way to make the game playable without playing Diablo tycoon on the auction house, reducing issues related to the game's always-on requirement, and they are "also working on a gameplay system that will provide players who have max-level, high-powered characters new goals to strive for as an alternative to the 'item hunt'." Here's a bit:

You’ve seen some of that work already in patch 1.0.3, and you’ll see additional improvements with patch 1.0.4. On the game balance front, this update will contain changes designed to further deliver on the team’s goal of promoting “build diversity,” with buffs to many rarely used, underpowered class abilities. Another topic we’ve seen actively discussed is the fact that better, more distinct Legendary items are needed. We agree. Patch 1.0.4 will also include new and improved Legendary items that are more interesting, more powerful, and more epic in ways you probably won’t be expecting.

We’re also working on a number of interface updates, including social improvements that will allow players to more easily view their friends’ achievements, more quickly join games, and more efficiently communicate with each other. In addition, we’ll be making updates to the auction house in the future to provide players with better information through tooltips and notices, offer improved search functionality, and more.

I think gaming took a nosedive when developers figured out they could get people to play their games for an adrenaline fix or a gambling fix. It's kind of messed up really.

That said, there are two ways to look at Diablo 3's success, IMO. Sales is one, but being a "Diablo" game is another. Sales, that's great for Blizzard. Maybe it's partly my fault, I built up so much hype for this game over the years it was probably impossible for Blizzard to meet my expectations. But I have no desire to play it anymore. There's nothing there for me, it seems to be missing too much of what made the previous games more replayable and actually enjoyable in those replays. I have come to realize I only really had fun playing this game once, the first time through. There is too much wrong with the actual game right now. To me, this game has bombed. It might be salvaged, but it will take a long time and I have waited long enough. I am moving on, and unfortunately so are a lot of other people. I don't have the numbers, obviously, but I suspect "millions" of people are not still playing this game or at the very least not enjoying the game anymore. They're just hooked on the pointless grind.

When they do the end of the year game summaries ... like best RPG, best MMORPG ... if they have a spot for Biggest Disappointment of the Year (and probably decade) Diablo III should win it hands down. I can't speak as much of an expert, since none of my characters got higher than mid-40s, and I think I ended with less than 100 hours on all combined. But that was more than enough for me to find D3 just doesn't do it for me. About the best I can say for it is, it kept me busy long enough to finally kick WoW to the curb.

Remember the days when a future Blizzard release would get your gaming mojo flowing? Those days are gone. As a long time gamer, I'm truly sad about this. Everything they release now I'll be looking for what way they're trying to scam me. Titan? D3 expansions? SC2? No thanks. There are far too many great games being made by great people to bother with the money grab scam $$AH$$ Blizzard.

The whole game right now is tweaked for fanatics. If you are a fanatic, then indeed the above fully applies. If you are a regular player, then you can neither get good drops nor buy anything because to you gold is at a premium and you can barely get any. For the fanatic, 35MM gold pieces is nothing. For me, it's damn impossible.
