Sword of the Stars II (I understand it got terrible reviews, but most of them seem to be based around the unplayable state of the game at launch, which is supposedly much improved currently)

If you try it before the sale is over, can you post and let us know how it is? I was about to get it myself, but the low reviews scared me off. Just a couple sentences like if you think its worth buying would be adequate.

I'll try. I haven't installed it yet because I'm in the middle of upgrading my desktop, but I should be getting the last shipment of parts tomorrow. I'll be sure to make it part of my first round of installs.

Pretty slow sale for me so far. This is all I've grabbed:

Warlock + DLC
Trine 2
The Witcher 2
Borderlands DLC
Saints Row The Third DLC
Frozen Synapse Red DLC
Fallout New Vegas Ultimate (for the DLC)
Red Faction Guerrilla

The $50 paradox bundle on steam? Mind if I ask what you wanted out of that?

Europa Universalis III, Sword of the Stars II (I understand it got terrible reviews, but most of them seem to be based around the unplayable state of the game at launch, which is supposedly much improved currently), Warlock: Master of the Arcane, and some of the Magicka DLCs that I didn't have. I already had Mount & Blade + Warband/Fire and Sword, and Crusader Kings II so I lost some value there. I was hoping that it would give me extra copies of the games I already had so that I could gift/trade them, but alas that was not the case.

I'm not sure Sword of the Stars 2 will ever be finished. They release two patches a week and have been doing so since the game's release. Either the game was still pre-alpha or they keep breaking stuff with each patch. Probably both.

This sale has been kind of a disappointment for me so far. I don't know if it's because I already own most of the "must-have" games or if the choices just suck, but I've only dropped about $70, and the bulk of that was on the Paradox Bundle.

The only game I was really hoping for was ArmA II, which a friend of mine happened to gift me the other day (it's been 20% off but I was hoping for it be a daily deal or flash sale at 60-75%). I just haven't seen anything that I thought was worth jumping on.

I'm fairly sure arma 2 is going to go on a good sale on steam before this is up, I think they are hoping to milk the 20% off as much as they can first though.
So many people breaking the "do NOT buy stuff on steam until the last day if its not a daily/flash deal" rule that arma II is still staying near the top even at just 20% off.

And worst case, if it doesn't go on sale, one can pick it up on amazon, though thats not a steam version I don't think.

I'm not sure why Deep Silver is so hesitant to give a decent discount on Risen 2. The game did not receive critical acclaim upon release. The patch added dodging and the ability to block monsters, which would have greatly improved the game's critical reception.

If they drop it down to $15 during the Steam sale, I'm sure a lot of people will be willing to give it a chance.
Acclaim? I'm surprised they lived down the '3 on-disc DLC at launch, but making you wait weeks to even get a chance to buy/play it'

To be fair, the DLC was pretty half-assed and forgettable. You could play through the game without them and not miss anything meaningful.

Is it similar to FEAR 2? I loved the first game and hated the second, so I never really paid any attention to the third.

Yeah, it's a lot like Fear2. It's a consolized shooter, though Fear3 does play a bit better, I think.

FEAR was still by far the best of the series (although I really enjoyed Fear2's variety of environments, and the school level was actually far more spooky than anything else in the series.)

If you didn't like 2, you probably won't like 3 either.

Eh? I thought FEAR 2 was significantly better than FEAR 3. FEAR 3 felt more like CoD. It even has regenerating health.

If it's still on, btw, Fear3 for 5 bucks is very, very good value. It's a solid shooter, even though the story becomes quite a bit naff. (yes, far more than in the first two.)

I quite enjoyed playing it.

So glad I passed on Space Marine now too. Thanks for the info!

Finished Space Marine. You get the Fun Jetpack a grand total of 3 times in the game, for a total of 15 minutes. And the final two levels against Chaos are just fucking aggravation. I'd heartily recommend passing it up.

I really feel like I wouldn't mind the game if I could just press the use button or move a little faster than an 80 year old man.

I played the 2008 mod "Dear Esther" and felt like I was missing something. I'm debating whether or not to try it again to see if I get anything more out of it this time. Reviews on it tend to be pretty polarized, and then there's the never-ending debate as to whether it even qualifies as a game...

You get used to it. You already run a Microsoft OS (in some way) so it's not like it's infecting your computer with anything it doesn't want.

dead rising 2: off the record is on flash sale for $10 for another 2 hours. Its basically the ultimate version of DR2 (it also includes the DLC from the original DR2). Its quite a fun game, and well worth the $10 IMHO. While the DLC for OTR isn't on sale, I dont think any of it is that important.

Oh and unepic for $5? thats a very fun game
