I have to admit, I was looking forward to this... until I saw it was
a) Not a remake but a re-release
b) Tied to their own unique store. I don't need yet another account to keep track of, I have enough of them. All this says is people are just trying to follow the EA model of "Well if that company can do their own store and maximize profits, so can we."
c) The comment about cloud saves makes it sound very much like always on DRM just trying to hide as something else, a la Diablo 3 |

| This is going to look extremely bad if Square hasn't replaced the prerendered backgrounds and FMVs with HD versions. Those things looked terrible even when the game was released over a decade ago. |

Does every fucking game have to have fucking achievements? How about the achievement of finishing the game? Like every other achievement in every game with achievements, it won't count for shit in your pathetic life, but you probably need SOMETHING to feel good about yourself that you can twitter to the fellow losers who follow you.
Anyhoo... can't wait to play it.

| The ties between Cross and Trigger are deeper than what it appears. Unfortunately because they made the connections so transparent it's understandable to be disappointed. I do agree Cross wasn't as good but I still think it was a great game. Cross did some things really well, some things not. Trigger was like capturing lightning in a bottle, it did EVERYTHING well. |

| Unless youtube is lying the movies have been upgraded - not all the way, I'd have to guess <720p but they are way better than the stretched 320x240 I'm used to seeing from this game. |

Of course nobody back then expected Mr Farty to become the sidekick in gears of war or that characters in games in general would become more and more stereotypical unlike-able twats as the years went by.
FFVII and FFIX are part of a dying breed of games with nice, fun, characters who emotionally involve the players. These days most of the 'heroes' are lumps of meat with biceps bigger than they're necks. If I saw somebody with biceps bigger than they're neck walking down the street I'd cross the damn road! |

FFVII was an excellent game and was revolutionary for the time. It's easy to dismiss it by modern standards but that's revisionist history. It had ground-breaking 3D graphics, a truly superb soundtrack (it sounds dated but musically it's excellent), an emotive and well delivered narrative and a large game world - combined together it resulted in a classic game.
Unfortunately this isn't a remake but a re-release designed to run on modern operating systems. I honestly believe that this is one of the few games worthy of a true remake. You rarely hear people asking for a remake of FFVIII or FFVI, yet you constantly see people hoping for a FFVII remake - just look at the discussion that the FFVII PS3 tech demo generated.
Naturally whenever anything becomes popular it becomes cool to dislike it, especially when referencing other games in the series. To claim it's the worst in the series is laughable.
PS - The re-release has already generated quite a lot of criticism as it's exclusive to the Square Enix store. It won't be coming to Steam according to their Twitter page. It looks like they've improved the graphics a bit but it's not even close to modern standards. Although I really enjoyed it at the time I can't see myself playing through it unless it receives a full remake, as it hasn't aged well. |

It left a real bad taste. |

Initially, this seems like a title to skip, barring it being released for a very small charge amount.
After all these years, they will only re-release it with minor tweaks than remaking it? Also, does the game really hold up that well? I certainly played it at the time, but it always struck me as the Halo of the RPG world - great for the new console gamers, but certainly not a defining RPG, especially not compared to what we were playing on the PCs. Will the racism be maintained? Smirking at the massive difference between in-game and cinematic graphics, Ray |

*tap tap* is this on? Hello? Chrono Cross was so bad it killed the franchise.
Anyway, FFVI is the superior game, but I'll admit that the series peaked with VII. When people think of Final Fantasy they think of VII. That game was so disgustingly popular. The game definitely HAS NOT aged well that's for sure. Even my dad asked why I was playing with "bubble people"... back in 1997. Still though. What an EVENT it was. I bought the demo disc for $10 at Funcoland and bragged about it. lolwhatanerd. |

| I'm in a minority that actually enjoyed 8 more than the rest of the 32-bit games. In addition to that addictive card game I liked how you could just utterly wreck the difficulty with the junctioning system. Oh sure challenge is good and all but sometimes it's fun just seeing how much you can break it. |

FF8 definetly gets my grab for worst final fantasy. 7 ranks high but obviously the fighting engine is in experimental stages because of the number of unintended materia matchups. At least however the materia system was pretty easy to grasp.
That said.. no way no how, I ain't toching it. No real strong desire to replay it until they remake it with no graphics and remastered sound. Judging from the downvotes on the youtube clip, I am not alone. |

Wow, so much hate over at youtube. Best comment:
No *option* for Steamworks, to allow achievement integration and gain exposure on a 10-million users-per-day service? No collab with GoG.com, who'd definitely help distribute this version instead of patching the old PC version? For a company so large, limiting this game to digital self-distribution is pure arrogance; no matter how many sales this method guarantees, sales from co-oping with Steam and GoG would be several times greater, and gain the company some goodwill to boot. No purchase. |

I enjoyed FF VII (being the only JRPG I've played, not sure how it ranks), which I played on PC. But I agree it hasn't aged well, and begs a remake, not a re-release. Fun exploration and unique (to me, at the time) combat. And lots of cool stuff to do with the gems and chocobo and stuff.
Hey Lucasarts, where's our X-Wing remake? |
