You have no idea how right you are, fucking cheap modern houses all face the mid-day to afternoon sun with angled roofs that have angled velux windows, whoever had the ingenious idea to build windows and roofs that face the sun at the most effective angle to collect as much heat as possible should be shot.
roof floor gets up to 40°C thanks to a non-closed stairwell all the way down the cellar (hello ingenious engineers, ever heard of a chimney?) so thanks to that, not only can you not get rid of the heat but the 2 floors between cellar and roof get hotter and hotter as the house draws in the heated air from the ground level and then channels it upwards. As you have to close cellar windows in summer else you draw in the warm air all you get is a draft of hot air through the whole house (the chimney effect effectively kills all possibility of venting air to the side where no sun shines), AWESOME. And heavy rain + angled windows = no sleep because of the noise.
Argh, I could rant a book about the stupidity of building architects nowadays. And I would never ever again rent a house with velux windows. Although I should note that the reason this is particularly bad is that this is a arrangement of houses, so I only have the east and west sides to open windows.
And to top it off, the windows are not properly isolated from the outside (the frame gets extremely hot inside)
The only good thing about that is that my heating cost is extremely low in winter.. and the best thing, putting outside shades I would have to pay myself, and they cost upwards 500€ for a single window thanks to angled velux windows and 3 floor building
