Origin Sale; EA Calls Service "A Huge Success"

There's a big sale on the Origin Store celebrating the first anniversary of the launch of EA's online store. They are offering a 40% discount on several PC digital download special editions. Also, MCV notes a Q&A from last week on GameSpot with EA's David DeMartini, who calls the service's first year "a huge success." He also offers a criticism of Origin's stickiness, saying this is something they need to address going forward. "Being self-critical of Origin, I would say it's not sticky enough. And we want to put features in place where we fully take advantage of your friends lists and gameplay activities amongst all of your friends so you can compare achievements," he says. "We want you to be able to challenge your friends, and to challenge your friends to play other EA games to try and achieve things that might even be across EA games. A lot of people are loyal to us and we need to reward them with that stickiness, so we're looking in that direction."

I don't know why I bother.

Again, that is the ORIGIN STORE. Gee Beeamer, again, stop digging. Other people in this thread already see it. That you don't and then blame me... well, that says all about you.

THIS sale does not make him a hypocrite. THIS sale is 40% off. He specifically said 75% off.

Secondly, I'm still pretty certain you were calling 40% off hypocritical.
And I don't see a single sale over 40% right now, contrary to what theyarecomingforyou is saying. Even clicking "deals" shows just the 40% off. Clicking anything else is showing full price.

Then these discounts are different per country. Me, I see NFS:HP and DA:O cut from €50 to €5, for instance.

As for that Origins boss being a hypocrite, his quote:

Q: One of the things that Steam does is this random deep-discounting of software, and it works well for them. Do you see that as something you want to do?

David DeMartini: We won't be doing that. Obviously they think it's the right thing to do after a certain amount of time. I just think it cheapens your intellectual property. I know both sides of it, I understand it. If you want to sell a whole bunch of units, that is certainly a way to do that, to sell a whole bunch of stuff at a low price. The gamemakers work incredibly hard to make this intellectual property, and we're not trying to be Target. We're trying to be Nordstrom. When I say that, I mean good value - we're trying to give you a fair price point, and occasionally there will be things that are on sale you could look for a discount, just don't look for 75 percent off going-out-of-business sales.

And then he does that today, even if for some parts of the world apparently. CVG has that deep discount and points it in the article, 90% discount for DA:O. And now apparently these discounts are only in specific countries.

87.5% off:
Dragon Age: Origins (£40, down to £5)
75% off:
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
Spore
66% off:
Darkspore

It's ridiculous for EA to complain about Steam devaluing video games and to then offer 87.5% off a game. It would be comical if it was so fucking pathetic.

Start Origins or visit it. Go to the Sales part.
Or follow the link that was in the article I posted below.

Dude, that link is redirecting me to the Origin front page, which has all the 40% off sales.
There isn't a single sale greater than that for me. So I don't know why you're getting different sales than me.

Is that link working for anyone else? It's literally redirecting me to This

Plus, as mentioned, I can't go to the article you posted.

C'mon, this is a 40% off sale, you're going to say that's a "deep discount," relative to Steam, who does 75% off regularly?

Even you know better than that, but then again, you never jump on an opportunity to bash EA. Personally I don't find this hypocritical at all, nor do I find 40% off compelling enough to buy most of these games, let alone buy them on Origin over Steam...

You know what they say, you just lost a great chance to shut your mouth. Then again, any chance you take to spread misinformation and good stuff about the publishers you take it.

For those not reading the link, an example of deep discount: DA:O discounted by 90%.

Fine, that's a good link, but you're pulling pretty far with it. You called the guy a hypocrite for this particular sale, discussed in this particular thread, which is incorrect.

You should have put that link in your original post, and said "well, these discounts suck, but he hypocritically has already broken his 'no 75% off sales' with this DA:O sale."
Then you would have seen like less of a raving loon.

Stop digging. Really. You already are in a deep hole yourself. Not my fault you didn't even made the effort to compare the prices in origins and took word of mouth as fact. Then again, that's what you do always.

Also, this makes him a hypocrite. Last week he said discounts cheapen IP. This week he makes quite a deep discount on 18 titles. But I guess you're going to defend him even though it's indefensible but that's how you roll, publishers do no wrong.

I also wouldn't call $14.99 for the three year old Dragon Age 1 a deep sale considering I bought the Dragon Age pack(DAO: Ultimate Edition & DA2) for $9.99 two months ago on amazon. None of these "sales" are very good.

I just checked the Origin store and there are games on sale for 75% off. That makes EA completely hypocritical. Enough said.

Rattlehead wrote on Jun 18, 2012, 10:46:
I'm just gonna stop by and say I've never had a problem with Origin. I guess this makes me an EA fanboy/fucking idiot...
Nope. Stop trying to make yourself a victim. Origin itself isn't that bad and it's certainly better than many of its competitors (excluding Steam) - it's the business practices of EA that I object to. Boycotting Steam is one. Charging twice the retail price is another. Criticising Valve and then doing the exact same thing is yet another. The amount they charge for DLC is simply the icing on the cake.

EA produces dramatically more games than Valve so I would expect the Origin install base to expand pretty rapidly. However, it remains to be seen whether people will choose to buy games there when they're available for less on better competing services. At the end of the day Origin has an incredibly limited selection of games, with a poorly laid out store, a half-baked client and the prices are obscene. EA is doing absolutely nothing to win me over as a customer... in fact it's doing the opposite.

I don't see DA:O on sale, either, and computerandvideogames.com is one of about 6 domains blocked for me at work.

I wouldn't call the discounts "deep".

I wouldn't either. In fact most of the time the "sales" I get with Origin are actually just based around using a proxy server to obtain international prices. I never would have purchased BF3 Premium if I didn't get it at $24 or whatever last week.

I don't like the fact that Origin sales/coupons are so exclusive either. Most of the time I can't use a coupon code because the game is considered "new" or the game will be on sale but the DLC won't and so on. This rarely happens to me on Steam.

My other beefs:

- Unavoidable spam on load
- Monetizing dumb things like gun unlocks in EA titles (this is going to be a large emerging trend this year)
- Community features are rudimentary at best
- Game integration is poor for anything except the basic overlay
- Repair functionality doesn't work
- DLC integration is poorly implemented and there is often a delay between purchase and having it flagged in your account
- Still no per-game storage location setting, this would have been an easy one-up for them over Steam

I'd like to see some video recording and storage integration like Steam has or just some features that Steam lacks in general. Better library sorting options would be nice too.

The only 'stickiness' on Origin is that, despite me having told the bastards to STOP SHOWING ME ADS FOR YOUR FUCKING GAMES, it happily continues to do exactly that.

Any other 'stickiness', where friends 'challenge each other to play other EA games' is all made up in this delusional world that EA lives in, where they somehow believe that people voluntarily flocked to Origin, rather than being forced to do so.

Or, to describe it more elegantly: FUCK YOU, EA.
