Valve's Economist

Valve has appointed economics professor Yanis Varoufakis their "resident expert adviser" on economics, reports BBC News, saying the move was spurred by problems they ran into dealing with virtual currency exchange. This relationship seems to be a symbiotic one, as this will provide the opportunity to use in-game economies as test-beds for theories rarely available in his field. Thanks GamesIndustry International.

Seems like they're flexible on that part of it, but you'd need to have demonstrable proof of considerable quantitative ability. Having a doctorate is just one of the easiest ways to show that.

I do quantitative and theoretical work, but not to the extent or depth that they appear to be looking for.

There was some Gabe quote awhile back where he said that if their hiring standards were as high when they opened as they are now, a lot of the original folks might not have made the cut.

So (anyone applying) I wouldn't get too bent out of shape if you don't hear from them.

Whoops, read that wrong.

I love economics, was a tutor all through college, I never really understood why people didn't "get it". Once I spent some time with them, it just appeared that the teachers of the econ courses just weren't all that people person friendly.......a different point of view or example seemed to make things clear for most. If there was more money in it, and more organizations applied or hired economists to their payrolls, I probably would have stuck with it. Worked 6 years as a Sr Finance Analyst reporting to executives of organizations, which was probably the best I could do in that line of work at the time without going into a jr VP position.

Most economists would tell you that either label is quite limiting.

Speaking personally, I'm a microfoundations guy as far as macro thought is concerned.

Agreed. I also tend to focus on micro over macro. The Austrian School is interesting but much like the Keynesian or Classic or Neo-Keynesian or any other school, it's too limited. To be the best economist possible you have to go beyond the limits and adapt every knowledge you have to the work you do.

I suspect being able to experiment with this kind of thing is what attracted him to the job. The real world has a mass of external variables and other noise, this is an extraordinary opportunity for lab experimentation.

Maybe they can hire a couple of GUI specialists to polish up steam while they are at it. Or contract them out if the work isn't interesting enough.
+1

Steam has the best client for any digital distribution service but it's still pretty poor - organising games is cumbersome and you're limited to one category per game; the grid mode is horrible and slow; the list view looks terrible and only has very small icons; the community features are poorly laid out, don't update dynamically, are unreliable and slow to load, etc.
Yep exactly. They JUST recently added ability to search friends list (I bet it was just a few minute job of copying code from library search to friends window).

They have NO WAY of searching in your games library by category, so its nearly impossible to see what games I own that are co-op. They have them listed in each store page, but I'd have to go through 500 store pages to see each of my games if its co-op. You'd think they'd make it a little easier to buy and play games with certain features like that. I'm not the only one with this problem, there a tons of threads on steam about "wtf games are co-op"
Again, this should be easy to implement.

You also can't tag a friend or game with more than 1 tag. Yes I know this might create duplicates in the list, but there could be an option to show or hide duplicates or something.

Valve will need to update Steam with the upcoming release of Windows 8 in order to support Metro. Potentially the side-snapped mode would be incredibly useful and if it is done properly I could easily see myself leaving it open all the time. Valve supported Windows 7's jumplists quite quickly but I have a feeling that we won't see Metro support as quickly, as it is a much more substantial change.

So is he a Keynesian or Austrian economist? An Keynesian will deflate your in-game money as a sort of stealth theft and rationalize it by saying the game would break if they didn't steal the value of your currency. Also, they'll call it money when it's really just debt in disguise. They'll also do clever tricks like call the currency two different things at the same time as in 'dollars' or 'federal reserve notes.'

As an economist, he is gonna be so pissed off when he find out that they are using cardboard box full of money to hold up bookshelf.

Don't think an economist is gonna see that as good use of cash.

Go to Valve Software's jobs page, they'll tell you how to submit your resume/CV to them.

I sent mine in a while back to them, haven't heard back. Don't really expect to, seeing as, unlike Dr. Varoufakis, I'm not published.

You know as an outsider to the game industry you arrive at Valve HQ, take the tour, and are just like... Yes pay me an amazing salary for the rest of my life at a company where I can do whatever I want, where do I sign?

Even the driver in his story was in on the game... Oh a Valve interview? Congrats man!
