Slant Six Layoffs

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City developer Slant Six has offered 26 employees the choice between temporary layoffs and severance packages as a way of making ends meet, reports GameSpot, saying a majority chose the layoff option.

"Regretfully, we can confirm that there have been some temporary layoffs at our studio," the company's official statement reads. "We must stress that these are temporary layoffs, which means we are working very hard on new business prospects so we can reinstate every single person affected. As an independent and close-knit studio it is a very difficult but necessary business measure due to the current project cycle demands."

Err, Raccoon City has been out on PC for weeks. From what I've read, it's a pretty half-assed port of a game that was already half-assed to begin with.

Here's my review

Many studios work project to project, its nothing unusual if it IS temporary.

In fact its rare for a studio to have secure income sources that don't depend on the next game. Blizzard is one with monthly WoW subs. Valve is one with 30% of all transactions through steam.

You might think a company like Infinity Ward is one, but if they ever bomb with a game, they are likely finished. Bobby would just hand the next sequel over to any one of the other studios who would jump at the chance.

D'oh! I don't know what I was looking at. Never mind me - I think I'm over-tired from the endless shifts at work.

That's kind of crazy considering Raccoon City actually sold really well as I understand it.

It's not that crazy. Developers don't see a dime until the publisher has recouped development and marketing costs. In fact, most developers don't see a dime even after that. Royalties are a rare thing unless you work at a highly-established studio that has leverage.

In all likelihood, Slant Six doesn't have any other big projects lined up right now, hence the layoffs. That, or the project(s) are too early to need full staffing.

By "Racoon City" do you guys mean this game? http://store.steampowered.com/app/209100/

It hasn't released for PC yet, but it wouldn't be the first time the PC version lagged behind the console version by many months. I acually thought that looked pretty cool. I generally gobble up anything Resident Evil-related that makes it to PC since I've been a fan of the series since the first came out on PS1.

Sorry guys. I hope you all form your own development studio and make the next Minecraft or something. Good Luck!

Or why not "the next" Aliens or Prometheus game instead?

Some of the devs probably have their own ideas which might actually sell. Unfortunately they have been buried under sequels that nobody wanted.

Maybe if SlantSix would stop making garbage they wouldn't have to lay people off. Socom:Confrontation sucked, Raccoon City sucked even worse.
