If by succeed you mean slowly draining market share on all fronts... I guess it is actually commendable that until Windows 8 Microsoft actually remained relevant. But W8 is such monumental crap that there will no stopping the decay when it releases. Windows 7 will likely be the last real PC OS from Microsoft, until Ballmer takes the ball and leaves. And by then, Microsoft will be struggling to compete with whomever took over market dominance. Likely not Apple. I can imagine Google pushing out an OS with direct windows emulation but we'll see that in a year. ;p
Business will NEVER leave Windows dependencies behind but if an OS could offer 100% compatibility with Windows drivers and the API's it could completely dominate. People will change whenever there is a superior product at the right time. And I think 2-3 years after Windows 8 is that time.
Lot's of notebooks nowadays still have trackpads or mice. Using windows 8 with a trackpad is physically nearly impossible. and nearly 90% of all already existing touch-screen devices have smaller or larger issues with Windows 8 that are touch related (gesture recognition) That's how monumental a fuckup Windows 8 is. Also, Metro is not optional. There is no "disabling all that crap" . Metro is forever in your face. Windows 8 is like a prison compared to Windows 7. Seriously, anyone should get the preview and test it himself or herself. So don't take my word for it. Windows 8 lived exactly 13 hours on my test system.
